5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! I think Torey Hayden is a genius novelist!
This book was fantastic. I had only read one of Haydens books previous to this one but you can be assured that I will have to get my hands on her whole collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Miracles can happen for the most hopeless lost causes"
I am also the mother of a "Special Needs" child; I happened to discover "Twilight Children", Torey Hayden's most recent book by chance in a local bookstore. I was spellbound and couldn't put it down, and when I had read that book, I ordered everything else she ever wrote from Amazon (how's that for a recommendation?). This book,(and I say this without exaggeration) literally made me gasp at some parts and cry at some others. This is a book that I feel would be of value to parents of special needs children, but also to members of Alcoholics Anonymous, or anyone who believes (or wants to believe) that miracles can still happen to the most hopeless of "lost causes".

4-0 out of 5 stars just another kid
In this book, Torey Hayden teaches a challenging class for emotionally disturbed children consisting of Shamie, Geraldine and Shemona, three refugees from Northern Ireland, one of whom (Shemona) is an elective mute; Dirkie, who has schizophrenia; Mariana, who is sexually precocious but academically behind; and Leslie, also autistic and unable to communicate. Hayden could badly use an aide, and she accepts Leslie's mother, Ladbrooke, who is a beautiful but aloof women with a history of alcoholism and child abuse. Through their relationship, Ladbrooke comes to trust Hayden and begins to face up to her problems.Through working with the children, Ladbrooke develops considerable self-esteem.All but one of the children improve, as well, and make dramatic gains in academic and social skills. In an epilogue, we learn of updates, the most remarkable perhaps being Ladbrooke's.This is anything but a grim read, however, Hayden seasons her book with a healthy dollop of black humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple techniques create amazing results.
This remarkable little book may change the way you think about knee pain. Instead of focusing on pain symptoms and where they originate, the author focuses on what your knee does - and how to improve those functions with simple exercises. The only anatomy lesson you need is to know where your quadriceps and hamstring muscles are - front and rear of your thigh respectively.
5-0 out of 5 stars what you need and nothing extra
This book doesn't waste your time - it just reports what research says has been effective and then lays out a simple routine of exercises you can do at home, with extensions if you want to go further.I've had good results from following basically the same routine he suggests - it's given me back hope that fifty-year-old knees can survive a running program after all, and it's helped me avoid surgery which probably wasn't needed. It also cut through a lot of conflicting and confusing diagnoses and went straight to advice on how to avoid pain - who cares about the exact cause if it goes away?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Besides being an easy read, I found this book to be a common sense approach to the care of your knees. With disability in both of my knees, I found the author's approach very beneficial and would highly recommend this book to anyone with knee problems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing and inspiring look at what it means to parent a disabled child
I've just listened to Mary Beth and Megan on the Diane Rehm Show and was very moved by their openness in describing their sons with Fragile X and their life with them, how they parent these sons, searched for the best education and medical care for them, and how they have found meaning and joy in their sons, despite their severe disabilities. Their book is an inspiration to all parents with disabled children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for all Fragile X families!
This is the book that all of the families in the Fragile X community have been waiting to read. These letters between two women tell us the story of their personal griefs and triumphs; but they tell us so much more. The chapter called Dropping Bread Crumbs explains Fragile X for the layman more clearly than you've ever heard it explained before. We will all relate to the devastating news of the diagnosis in the chapter called Diagnosis and Dealing. And we will admire the courage of Kelly Randels' chapter on the hearbreak of facing an abortion. These women have the courage to tell us what we need to know; and the talent to keep you riveted throughout their journey in a world that has been defined for them by Fragile X.A extraordinary accomplishment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most remarkable, touching, educational, moving book
This is an incredible book.Mary Beth met Megan at a conference for parents of children with Fragile X, and decided to write to her.Mary Beth wrote to Megan, and in her letter, she quotes Margaret Mead:"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world."And, indeed they have. They have also exchanged these simple, yet powerful letters. -- letters that talk about daily life, advice to each other, their family histories, the nature of Fragile X, the pain of Mother's Day, the nature of what is a home -- an endless array of interesting subjects. But these letters reveal so much more, namely, their courage, their disappointments, their tenacity, their truthfulness, their endless ability to love. It is a book that shows the human spirit at its best and is an inspiration to us all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was the first step to our son's recovery
Two days after my son was diagnosed with autism, I dragged my mom to the library to see if I could find out what in the world this meant to us.One of the first books that we stumbled on was this book by Karyn Seroussi. After reading several excerpts about her son to my husband, we agreed that we saw a lot of parallels in our own son.By the end of the weekend, we decided to take a leap of faith and implement the GFCF diet that Ms. Seroussi described.
1-0 out of 5 stars Huge guilt trip!
I read this book to try and find more help for my son with autism. After learning about the diets I realized they would be nearly impossible for my family to implement. These diets are very expsensive and my son would probably refuse to eat most foods and recipes talked about in the book.Realizing this I felt extremely guilty that I wasn't willing to do everything possible for my son. I have had my son in early intervention, speech therapy and a very demanding and structured program for over 3 years. These therapies have made a world of difference for him but he is still autistic. So, if I am unable to put him on this diet does this mean I have failed him as a mother?I don't think so.We can only do what we are all capable of doing for our children. We shouldn't be made to feel guilty if we don't do everything that everyone else has done.It would be nearly impossible to try every single thing suggested for helping to improve symptoms of, or even "cure", autism.I say give yourself a big pat on the back if you are doing the best you can for your child with ASD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unraveling the Mystery of Autism and PDD: A Mother's Story of Research & Recovery
Excellent book! A must read for any parent (or teacher) of a child with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) or any neurodevelopmental delays, ADHD or allergies. It reads like a suspense novel, with the author/mother as detective, desperately, yet thoroughly trying to find clues to her son's sudden demise. Through her dedication and persevearance, she finds successful treatment for her son, and unravels a series of inexplicable biological mysteries involving foods, allergies, vaccines, viruses and their serious effects on the developing brains of children. It is a wake-up call to what we have previously viewed as "genetic" and "untreatable" and should make the medical community seriously abandon this old paradigm and put effort into establishing a new paradigm, where a causal relationship exists between ASD and its related disorders and biological and environmental triggers. This paradigm shift would dramatically alter the management of children diagnosed with ASD today and in the future. This book shows the power of a determined parent - reminiscient of the story of "Lorenzo's Oil". The moral of the story - don't rely on your child's doctor to tell you about this mode of treatment, or on any nutritional management - they are not prepared to do so. Traditional AMA medicine is geared towards quick diagnosis, treatment with drugs, and possibly some therapies. Often this involves treatment of symptoms, not cause. This book also made me wonder just how many 'troubled' or behaviorally challenged children could benefit from dietary changes, not medication. Mrs. Seroussi has done a great service to autistic and neurodevelopmentally challenged children and their parents. She has put into words an alternative choice for parents and offers hope, something the medical profession as a whole has not only not offered, but at times has suppressed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for This Book
If it weren't for this book, and for James Webb, I might have believed the teachers and psychologists who told me that something was really wrong with my daughter. After reading this book, I realized that several things were really right with her, but that we weren't handling her in the ways most likely to help her adapt and succeed.
1-0 out of 5 stars where to start?
I have so many problems with this book that there is no way one review can include them all.I'm going to list some of the major ones here.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vital information at an appropriate time!
After having read this book, I can't help but wonder how many lives have been damaged by the ignorance of those involved in the Mental Health occupations.I hope when parents (or even non-parents) read this book, they learn how important it is to be self-informed (at least to some degree) before they go trusting "professional" help, especially when professionals these days are so sure of themselves and have so much power over others' lives. It's a fine line between playing God and being an appropriate therapist when it comes to understanding human behavior. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars interesting
This book was interesting enough, but I don't feel that it helped me really understand men going through a mid life crisis.I will still keep it on my bookcase though.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Negative...
Although informative, this book comes from a very negative place. While some men do participate in affairs during their midlife crisis, there are some who don't, as well as those who come to their senses and want to work on their marriages. For those searching for hope, handling the issue with realistic expectations and integrity, I would suugest Jim and Sally Conway's books, "Men in Midlife Crisis" and "Your Husbands Midlife Crisis."
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide through the journey called midlife crisis!
It is unfortunate that so many marriages are falling prey to midlife crisis (if you want to call it that).Point is our disposable society makes it too easy to divorce. This book is a pratical guide to help you traverse this journey. Not only is the book an easy read and very helful in understanding and keeping yourself in check, it really focuses on learning about yourself and not talking blame for your wayward spouses issues. It helps you be a better you!As well, the website listed is a direct link to others suffering the same things. That site has so much information, one could read for days. There is also chat which is helpful and one bonus is that friends can be made to last a lifetime. This book has it all and I implore anyone in the throes of this anxiety called midlife crisis to read this book and then peruse the site for loving and supportive help. Editorial Review

Who is best equipped to give sex tips to heterosexual women about how to please a man in bed? Why, gay men, of course. Who would know better than gay men what makes men happy? Dan Anderson (gay) and best friend Maggie Berman (straight) have collaborated on this how-to book for women who feel that their lovers are afraid to ask for what they want. Chatty, informative, and graphic--in a clinical, not sexy way--Anderson and Berman have borrowed a little from Helen Gurley Brown, a little from Miss Manners, and a lot from Masters and Johnson to show women how the other half loves. Never smug and mostly useful, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to share with your girlfriends!
I bought this book after reading a few paragraphs aloud in a bookstore. The authors point out many things that are common etiquette for gay men, that don't usually occur to straight couples. Every chapter is loaded with hilarious anecdotes as well as practical advice. I have loaned this book to a number of friends, some of whom bought it because they liked it so much. It's also fun for a girls' night in, to get discussion rolling on everybody's favourite topic.

2-0 out of 5 stars It was just alright.....
Frankly, I was disappointed by this book.Although it had one or two good tips, it certainly was not the arsenal of cool sex tips that it's made out to be.I've gotten more information from some other books I've read (The Ultimate Guide to Performing Fellatio). Decent for a beach read, but don't expect rockets.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cute books but tips useless!
This book was really well done with regards to its artwork and writing style. It's got a really cute/kitchy retro style. But are you buying the book for its artwork or for its tips, supposedly coming from those who would surely know?Well, I bought it for some good tips, and without getting too specific in a public forum, let's just say that I do not recommend any of the advice given!!Two of the techniques in particular were completely to the contrary of what any of my partners have since said they like. This book was a great idea in theory, but in my experience, it wasn't the least bit useful. Use at your own risk! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars the unrevised version is better
I agree with Aimee book lover, AP parent.I too did not like the updates. They are so concerned with being pc that they took away from the good feeling you got from reading the older version.I had borrowed the old version for my previous pregnancies and I loved it.It was about natural birth and home births and water births and left the reader feeling uplifted.I bought the new one for my last pregnancy and was really disappointed. It is so pc that that is all you think about as you are reading it.Save yourself some money and buy the older version from the used books on Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly, these are issues with reviews...
I have found this book helpful, though somewhat biased towards a natural birth. However, for anyone who read anything about this book prior to purchasing it, that should come as no real surprise. What I was surprised by was women's reactions to it:
1-0 out of 5 stars Offensive
I found this book to be very biased and offensive.I agree with one of the other reviewers, her section on hyperemesis is downright wrong and condescending. As long as you have a healthy pregnancy and want a natural childbirth, you might like this book. For the rest of the world that lives in reality, you might find her narrow-minded approach offensive. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars learn AND share
I have all three of these journals--pregnancy, 1st year, & now the toddler edition. I like that it gives you information about your toddler's cognitive, physical & emotional development but I especially like that it also suggests games and activities to help your toddler's development. It gives prompts & space for your personal entries--I do a lot of writing to journal these precious days--so, I wish there were more space for journalling. The week-to-week account (opposed to the day-to-day of the other two journals) is much more practical/doable at this stage--with a toddler to keep up with. :0) I definitely recommend ALL THREE--this will allow my little one a first hand account of what she did, when. AND my feelings, in my own words (even when I'm too old to remember). :0)

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS JOURNAL/BOOK
This is by far my favorite toddler book that I own. Each week you get developmental steps as well as activities and more. At the end it gives you note spaces and it asks you questions you normally wouldn't think to write about but that you and your child will appreciate later on. I highly recommend this book and know that you will enjoy it as much as I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best place to keep your memories!!!
This is a GREAT book!!! You learn about what to expect a week at a time and there is plenty of space for you to keep memories of your own for you child.I love this book and have bought 2 of them, one for me and one for my sister-in-law to keep for my niece who is 2 months older than my son. There are plenty of tips on what is coming up each week for your child, and things that you can do and expect.I HIGHLY recommend this book!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pregnancy Book Out There
This is the most informative, positive, and non-scary pregnancy book I've read.Every other pregnancy book I've read (including What to Expect When You're Expecting) made me cry after every paragraph as it detailed all the horrible things that a woman can do to permanently damage her baby, all the awful ways a woman's body will be disfigured by pregnancy and childbirth, and how a woman's life will be completely changed, not for the better, once the child is born. This book, on the other hand, presents information about pregnancy and childbirth in a wholly positive manner, even when detailing the potential pitfalls of pregnancy and childbirth. The information in this book is current and up-to-date, and the book is very well-written.I would recommend the book just for the positive and reassuring tone alone, and all the excellent information in the book is a bonus.Once you read this book, you won't need any other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than What to Expect When You're Expecting
As a first time mom & in my 2nd T-mester, I bought both this book & What to Expect.Great Expectations is WAY more useful! It reads more like a reference book which makes looking up specifics very easy.It also gives you week by week updates on fetal developement. I 'used' both books to start, but by week 10 retired that other book for Great Expectations. I even used this book to help create our babyregistry. HIGHLY recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Recommended
This book is a great resource for clinicians, survivors, and anyone who knows a survivor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still classic and gay affirmative
This book is one of the first books I read which includes examples of gay men sexually abused as children without including homosexuality as the result of sexual abuse. If you are a gay man and are looking for an affirmative book on sexual abuse which does not pathologize your gay identity, look no further. Lew has written it and you have found it!
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for Survivors.
My copy of Mike Lew's book is well worn, most pages have sections underlined and notes written down the margins.

5-0 out of 5 stars I did get pregnant after one month!
I did not follow the diet strictly, but I simplified the diet by buying Amy's brown rice and tofu bowls which had most of the ingredients she recommended. I ate one of these every day for lunch. I also ate yams, yams and more yams.I got them from the local International grocery in St. Louis.I would think it would be hard to implement this diet if you are not in an urban area. I had been trying to get pregnant for a year before I tried this, and when I tried the diet, I got pregnant within a month.I agree that the diet is confusing, and it was impossible for me to follow strictly. But I did do the best I could and it seemed to work.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book just makes sense
The previous reviewer's comments seem very harsh, and I can only guess she was hoping for a quick fix to her own infertility. How can one blame infertility on a good diet? I think the author makes a very solid connection between diet and infertility and her recommendations are good, but of course, one needs to be ready to implement change. If you are not ready to give up meat, of course you may be put off by her advice as the previous reviewer was. Animal proteins (meat) are not the only, and definitely not the best, source for iron, zinc and calcium. Any quick search on the internet will provide you with a list of alternative sources for these minerals...plus most women who are trying to get pregnant should be taking a prenatal vitamin, which will supplemant their mineral needs. But one should always look to food sources first for their vitamins and minerals as they are most easily absorbed by the body. I for one agree that food has a connection to infertility, plus who wouldn't want to "detox" their bodies to ensure they have a health environment for a growing baby.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a Try
I bought this book and went on the diet during my second IVF cycle--after 3 years of trying.I got pregnant for the first time in my life...Unfortunately, I miscarried at 11 weeks, but this was due to Down's Syndrome & my doctors have told me it was not related to my infertility problems (endometriosis) at all.
