5-0 out of 5 stars Reassuring, not depressing
I read the negative reveiws of this book before I had my baby, and decided against buying it.Then, after my baby was born, I was frustrated with baby books that made me feel like the way I was feeling and the way I was doing things was all wrong, and I was hungry for anything that was written for new mothers (sadly, this was about it).I have to say, this book was the only thing that made me feel like I wasn't crazy, and that there wasn't anything wrong with me because I was having a hard time.I guess motherhood came easy for those people who wrote such scathing reveiws, but even though my baby is the best thing that ever happened to me, some days I can't stop crying and wondering how I will do this for the rest of my life.Yes, you will be sleep deprived, and your baby may cry for what seems like no reason, and it will break your heart and you will wonder if you are cut out for this whole motherhood thing. At least, that's how I feel, and thank God for this book so I know I'm not alone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Garbage!
This book is pretty near worthless. I started reading it knowing that I was unlikely to agree with much of Vicki's "advice," but I thought it still might be funny. It wasn't. Also, lots of her advice is not only wrong it is *completely* wrong--as in, not only not backed up by evidence, but actually *contraindicated* by evidence. I could not even finish reading the book after I got to the complete drivel that was her "advice" on infant feeding--she presented the section as "common considerations when deciding to breastfeed" and then proceeded to describe the absolute worst-case-scenario for everything possibly related to breastfeeding (& several things that can't be blamed on breastfeeding at all!). It was a common considerations section, but would have been more aptly named, "reasons I think breastfeeding is awful and no one should do it" section.
1-0 out of 5 stars very few mothers could relate to any ofthis!
This was the most useless book I have ever read on being a parent. The author goes on and on about how painful and excruciating breastfeeding is, and how all "girlfriends" can relate to this pain if they are breastfeeding.Huh??If she had read any books on breastfeeding at all or gotten some basic advice from a lactation consultant, she would realize that her baby was latched on incorrectly and would have corrected the problem. Also, she talks about girlfriends hiding from their husbands in the house so that they can breastfeed? What?!?!This book just infuriated me, it was so shallow and pointless, I feel like the author lives in a world all her own, inhabited by stepford wife-like "girlfriends" who struggle incessantly with mothering a new baby and have to hide everything from their dumb husbands who are completely incompetent. How insulting!!Don't waste your time or money on this garbage. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and a great book to own
I absolutely loved this book. I initially picked it up because of the pictures in it (most of the other books I looked at just had sketches) and quickly found that I really enjoyed the format of it and the overall wealth of information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Had Seen This Book 6 Months Ago!
What an excellent book.It is all-encompassing, and not only takes you through pregnancy in a non-biased way (giving you a broad perspective with a ob-gyn to a midwife) it gives you a look through and after child birth. The information is accurate, complete, helpful, and easy to digest. It puts all of the other pregnancy books to shame.I bought the old stand-by "What to Expect When You're Expecting" when I first found out I was pregnant and think it will work well for starting a fire in my fire pit now that I've found "I'm Pregnant!".

1-0 out of 5 stars Pro-life readers beware.
I loved this book until I started reading the fine print.Anyone who is pro-life will not appreciate the references to termination. It is also seemingly bragged that few down syndrome babies are now born due to early diagnosis and abortion.I find this to be a sad fact rather than something to rejoice over. The book was fantastic except for those parts which took the joy completely from this book. Many pregnancy books discuss medical issues without having to suggest abortion. It ruined the book for me.I tossed it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential addition to your personal library!
If you can purchase only one book about communicating health information to consumers, make it Helen Osborne's "Health Literacy from A to Z!" As a consumer health librarian working with people with disabilities, their caregivers and service providers, I have been a health literacy advocate for several years. Helen's articles and books were among the first I discovered. She continues to be a pioneer in the field, inspiring people to seek creative and effective ways to make health information accessible for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Empower Your Patients With Help From This Book
We often think our patients understand us fully when we provide them with information regarding their diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. In fact studies show that over half of the adult population has trouble processing and acting on this information correctly. Poor compliance often leads to poor outcomes. We need to ensure that our patients get "the whole picture".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worst Case Scenario Book for Having a Second Child
If you are going to read only one book on introducing a second child to your family, this is the book to read. It offers advice on what to expect, things to think about and behaviors to watch for.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing exceptional, Just Ok
I wish the book gave more creative solutions. I felt the book gave advice that I could have given myself. On the other hand, at least I felt reasured that I was already doing everything I could to make sure the transition for my son of having a new sibling wasn't any more bothersome than it has to be. It's a simple read. You will pick up a few good points but I just don't feel I got enough out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a BLESSING!!!!!
This book is a total blessing! I'm so happy that I ordered this book before the birth of my second child. I feel so well informed of what to expect from my first born when baby #2 comes home. Every mother should have this book before the birth of their second baby. In closing, I'm glad this book continues into the first year of the sibilings lives together! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars keep the age in mind
This is a well written babysitters guide. Just keep in mind that many states require that babysitters be 13 years old and have a babysitting class. If you aren't sure about your state's requirements (or didn't realize they existed), call your local department of Family and Children's Services and ask them the home-alone and babysitting age requirements.

5-0 out of 5 stars So, you want a night out?
Before you entrust your precious children to a babysitter, have them read this book. It is an indispensable and practical guide for babysitters.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date
This book was probably very important when it was published in 1992.But more than 10 years have passed, and the book is out of date.First, I find it suspicious that the authors blame hypoglycemia for 60 different symptoms. They take a "victim" attitude that everything unlikable in one's personality and habits can be blamed on one's hypoglycemia.I hardly find that to be the case in my own life.My bad temper is mine to conquer and not the "fault" of my hypoglycemia.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best treatment for Hypoglycemia
What an excellent book.Shame on me for not writing this review until now.I have been following the book since 2003 and it has changed my life dramatically.I can think and act very clearly and all my symptoms disappeared.Watch out, if you deviate from the program after starting it, symptoms will worsen.A must read for people with low blood sugar problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide I've found yet!
I found I suffered from 49 of the 60 symptoms of LBS just in the last week.I've had this book since I was 6 months pregnant in 1996 and found out I had LBS, but never took the time to read it; until this last week while I was too sick to get out of bed.

3-0 out of 5 stars One tough story more than an insight into autism
Well, if you want to get more of an idea of autism, where better than from the autobiography of an autistic woman?
5-0 out of 5 stars Donna Williams' Long & Winding Road
Donna Williams was very fortunate to know she had autism and was contending with an "unexplained difference" that was really not her fault. She has suffered major losses at an early age. When she was 4, her beloved grandfather died and her grandmother left their home. Her father was not allowed to have any contact with her and her mother was described as suffering from alcoholism and a myriad of phobias. She cherishes the hope that Donna will fulfill her own dream of being a dancer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Realy great book...
I wrote a reaction paper on this book for my exceptional child psychology class. The book was not only interesting to read but educational since it was an autobiography written by someone who expereinced growing up with autism. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
This a good resource for people who are choosing not to use medication to help manage AD/HD. The book give a basic idea of what AD/HD is. Laura Stevens provides a much needed road map for parents seeking help for their children with ADHD.By providing step-by-step instructions, sound nutritional knowledge, excellent examples, problem-specific narratives, and good, common sense day-to-day practices (i.e.-recipes), she is eliminating the frustration in the search for answers for current and future parents of children with ADHD.This book provides the type of aid that only could have been given by someone who has had first hand experience in raising children with ADHD.Parents can now learn what to do directly from the book rather than waiting while much of the medical community is playing catch-up to scientific literature.

4-0 out of 5 stars Activists for democracy: here's your guide to involvement!
Frances Moore Lappe has written a book that is easy to read, its pages filled with brief and concise facts and comparisons, and above all correct in its analysis of the state of American democracy. She doesn't leave the reader to guess about whether a new people's democracy is possible; she shows it coming into being in highly diverse settings. And if anyone has thought otherwise, she disabuses us of any idea that in the U.S. of A. we currently have democracy. It would be difficult to read this book all the way through and not find oneself eager to get involved.
5-0 out of 5 stars We Need to be Reminded
Democracy's Edge is a collection of stories of ordinary people actively practicing what the author really correctly dubs Living Democracy. When I read this, the book reminded me straight on how fragile freedoms and protections are, how easily they can be dissolved or subverted by corporate, personal, and political greed...ambitions which truly stop for no man (or woman)in the quest for taking more, more, more. So if you're worried about the pollution, land grabbing, political manipulations of law, etc and want inspiration and some guidance on whether and how you can make a difference with just one voice, read this book. It's SO EASY to read, and lacks the fractious tone that many champions of our freedoms (read liberal or left-leaning)can take, and sometimes push people away with.

Lappe plots the needs of the future. She points out what is needed for this country to become a real democracy. There are lots of resources for those determined to act. ... Read more

Health-care practitioners are a polarized lot: generally speaking, either they subscribe wholeheartedly to conventional medical treatments, or they eschew them altogether. This can be a great source of frustration to parents, whose natural response to a child's illness is a desire to do everything possible to make that child well. Written by a natural-medicine practitioner, a traditionally licensed doctor, and a pediatric nurse, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MVP- Most Valuable Publication for Parents.....Available!!!
This book was the most important parenting book that I have ever owned. It comforted me on late nights when my child (newborn-teens)might be up coughing, itching, or vomiting, etc.It gave me recommendations that I could do to help ease symptoms that my child was experiencing. While it is in no way a substitute for individual medical advise, it is an intelligent and practical guide. I often shared it with my pediatricians who were/are highly respected in their profession(and who were grateful for the varied information). It integrates Western and holistic medicine as well as wellness suggestions.I recommend it to EVERY parent that I know and I often give it as a shower gift or baby gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll wear this book out
I received this book as a baby gift and practically wore it out in the first two years of my child's life. She's 11 years old now and we still use it.Because of the variety of remedies suggested, anyone can use this book and find one that's comfortable for their family. We've been able to avoid antibiotics completely with the advice from the book. It's now my baby gift of choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars must have for home medical library
This is the companion book to Smart Medicine for Healthier Living for those with children. As the mother of 8 children I reference both often. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Kosher" sex is about motions that produce strong emotions...
I can't believe how long it took me to finally get around to reading this superb book (is there a ranking higher than five stars). On a semi-long flight, I'd almost finished it off in one sitting, but I hesitated, not wanting to gobble it up in one go. It was precious, meant to be savoured, and absorbed very slowly into the bloodstream.

Bible believers have been known to conform to pretty strange religious teachings but the thought of having sex in a manner that must be pleasing to God has got to be the biggest pile of tripe I have ever come across. What makes Shmuley Boteach thinks he knows what god likes when one is in the thralls of passion?????
4-0 out of 5 stars Men, read this!
This is a must read for all men, the younger you are when you read this, the happier you will be.This book helped me to reflect on my own life and articulate more clearly to myself and my wife the importance of our sex life.Men are taught early own that sex is all about pleasure and gratification. With this limited view, we are often left wanting more and more, never feeling satisfied. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I HOPED FOR
I bought this book hoping to find new and exciting meals and snacks for children.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a terrific resource for parents!
Food for Tots is a charming, information-packed resource that will help parents of toddlers find a wide variety of appealing and healthy foods.I especially enjoyed the "tot tips" that answered questions a parent might have as she reads the recipes and commentary. This useful book also includes important nutrition information, advice about common feeding problems and information about food allergies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved Me During the First Week
No matter what anyone says, breastfeeding is not always easy. There were times during the first couple weeks of breastfeeding that I thought that I would give up.This book saved me!!I only read the parts that I needed, and I felt encouraged.I would recommend this for any mother planning to nurse!!

5-0 out of 5 stars BestBreastfeeding reference out there
I totally disagree with the person that put this book down and touted the Dr. Sears book. I too have both books....in the early stages of breastfeeding when you and your little one are still trying to figure out everything....the Sears book is useless. It doesn't help you trouble shoot any problems you might be having...nor does it tell you things you might run into or pitfalls you might expect. This book however was my right hand guide. Any question or problem I ever had I always found a viable answer or suggestion in this book. That helped me continue on because I could carry on knowing everything was ok or that I should consult somebody for help. I think I am a testament to how helpful this was since I am still breastfeeding my daughter happily at 14 months and just starting to wean. My origional goal was only 6 months. Buy this book it is extremely helpful. Breastfeeding is not an easy thing even if your baby takes to it correctly right away. You have to be determined to make it work before the baby gets here. If you just say you'll try it...you will fail at it or give up fast most times I think. Any kind of helpful resource is a push in the right direction for the good of your baby. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!!!
This book is really good! It's funny and extremly informative. The only pitfall I think this book has is that it seems more geared towards people who are already certified. On the flip side though, it does have extremly good advice on becoming certified, taking exams, finding you niche etc...I would recommend this book to amatuers who are still in school (like me) and certified veteran personnal trainers alike :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but maybe hard to implement...
I thought the book was very interesting and thought provoking; however, I don't think it would be realistic for me as a mother of two young children to implement all of the lifestyle changes recommended at this time. I am hoping to start the process of "shedding," as the author refers to it, but I'm thinking it will be a long process (several years). Also, there is a lot of cost in changing all of your cosmetics, etc. And, I tried the organic deodorant (without aluminum) and I stunk too bad to keep using it--I went back to my old stand by. This is a good book to buy, though. It is well written and contains lots of good info and websites to go to for additional info. Hope this helped.
