1-0 out of 5 stars Tough language but few verifiable facts
In a world desperate for health solutions, the uneducated masses flock to purported cures and aids that havenot met the tests of either scientific or medical validity.Alkaline water is one of those potholes that the unsuspecting customer encounters.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great review of the science behind alkaline diets
This was one of the first books I picked up after reading Dr. Young's "The pH Miracle", which had left me with more questions than answers.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very valuable book
Forward-thinking health theorists stress the need for our bodies to be less acidic.Civilization and laziness have led most of us to detrimental eating habits, one result being acidic bodies. If you want to test your acidity all you need is ph testing paper from the health food store.Test your urine. Then try to get more alkaline. It isn't easy.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book when trying to decide if I wanted to breastfeed. I was scared to death from all the horror stories I'd heard about bleeding, painful nipples, and starved babies. It has put my mind at ease. I am now confident I can breastfeed. It answered all my questions and concerns and then some I had never even thought of. Highly recommended for anyone who is breastfeeding, or even thinking about it. ( I also like breastfeeding for dummies)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and resource
Great book.I recieved this book at the breastfeeding class I took before I delivered.I used this book all the time when I was nursing, it helped answer a lot of middle of the night questions.I read it before I had my baby, but then I used the table of contents and index after I had the baby to answer a lot of questions I was having.I highly recommend this book to anyone going to have a baby and plans to nurse. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the first time parent
I got this for my third child.I was acutally looking for a pregnancy journal that I could keep by months or weeks, not daily. Most of the journals that I checked out required daily entries which is almost impossible with two little boys.I figured If I get an organizer, I might be able to keep a good record that I can actually keep. Well, this is filled with great informations and plenty of space for interviews to choose Obstetrician, midwife, pediatrician, daycare arrangement; detailed shopping list to prepare for the baby; space for childbirth class notes; checklist for the delivery; and even the essential first week's worth of feeding and diapering record charts. This would've been a great thing if I got it for my first born. But I already know which obstetrician and pediatrician to go to, I already own lots of baby stuff, etc.Even though this is a great book, this didn't meet my need.I should've gotten the 'The Belly Book' by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Organizer!
I am 4 months pregnant and this item has been a huge help so far.It has great information and tips. The only part of this book that I do not see myself using is the OB interview pages, and this is only because I bought the book after I already had an OB.The book has everything to help you keep track of prenatal doctor visits, your baby registry, fetal movements, your weight, diet and the list goes on.It has very helpful checklists with tips, which I really appreciate because this is my first pregnant and I don't know what I am doing!I highly recommend this planner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Planner!
This is a fantastic planner for everyone whether you're pregnant yourself or as a gift. The checklists are incredibly helpful and organized; I especially love the interview questions for OBs and Midwives. The healthy diet information is accurate and really sorts out what is and is not ok to eat while pregnant. Also very helpful is the list of resources of websites and books.Just overall a very easy to use planner! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A valid modality
I has some good results with my asthma using the principles and disciples of this book. I adapted the precepts to incorporate the ECK Masters of Eckankar (www.eckankar.org) and have had amazing success. I found the book to be very informative and transformational.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can get beyond how strange this sounds...
I've found MAP to be an incredible, unique, effective method of healing, and a gift to the world. It requires a good degree of open-mindedness to get started, and one of the greatest drawbacks of using MAP is that -- though you may be excited and amazed by what the program does for you -- it may be difficult to talk about with your friends without them thinking you're crazy. I remain skeptical and agnostic about *how* this works. I don't know whether there really is such an entity as the Overlighting Deva of Healing (though I'm fascinated with such questions). I don't know if Machaelle Small Wright's explanation of what happens during the program is, in fact, what's really happening. All I know is that this program has worked and benefited me in a very real, powerful, concrete way. For me that's all that matters.

2-0 out of 5 stars judgmental!
The advice in this book is solid and appropriate for most kids. However, the writer's attitude is judgmental. If you are buying this book, it's probably because your child's eating has not gone as smoothly as you'd like. For most of us, a lot of our parental self-esteem is wrapped up in this issue. So it just makes no sense to act as if it's usually the parent's fault - why alienate and beat up your target audience???? Plus, while I'm sure that some parents contribute to kids' eating issues, plenty of kids are just born more sensitive! If you can read between the lines and get to the take home message without letting her attitude get to you, more power to you - otherwise, go elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for ending food-related conflicts
This book was recommended to me by our pediatrician when my then one-year-old son wasn't gaining weight rapidly enough. While his problem was not of the seriousness of failing to thrive, it was extremely stressful to my husband and I as first-time parents. And I learned the foundations for parent-child food conflicts can be laid well before the child can participate in a discussion.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good reading
I can't say exactly when my daughter became a picky eater. She started off great eating different veggie and fruit purees, and somewhere around 11 months, feeding went downhill quickly. It may have had something to with her daycare provider or something else she perceived as traumatic, but her preferred diet became yoghurt, Cheerios, and bananas. I tried for almost five months to "get" her to eat other things, then bought every toddler feeding book I could find. This was the one with the best layout, and best philosophy.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense, practical guide.
10 Simple Solutions To Adult ADD: How To Overcome Chronic Distraction & Accomplish Your Goals by Stephanie Moulton Sarkis, Ph. D. (Adjunct Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Florida) is a solid self-help guide to developing lifestyle patterns to offset the disadvantages for attention-deficit disorder in adults. The techniques to improve concentration and memory, manage money and time better, and raise self-confidence, while especially invaluable to adults with ADD, are also quite useful for lay readers of all backgrounds. From the "Five Box" method for sorting one's possessions (fix it, give it away, keep it, don't know, and garbage) to the value of using alarms in wristwatches to keep track of time (especially while on the computer) to using a seven-day pill container to ensure one takes the correct dosage of one's medication over the course of a week, the advice in 10 Simple Solutions To Adult ADD is invaluable. Additional tips for diplomatically disclosing that one has ADD, picking up nonverbal cues in social situations and much more round out this no-nonsense, practical guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to read this book!
I received this book as a gift. There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. I too could not put it down and finished it in 3 days. It's a huge book, a great resource that is well researched and written.. I have a few friends who've purchased this book and really loved it too. I can highly recommend this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great first TTC book to read...
My husband and I are looking to start a family in the next 5-6 months. I just finished reading this book and found it to be very informative, especially for someone who is just taking the first steps at learning how to optimally prepare for trying to conceive. It is written in simplistic language (which could seem overly simplified and repetitive to those who were already familiar with the information but was absolutely perfect for me, who just wanted to soak up all the information I could and fully understand what steps to take to promote pregnancy in the timeframe we are hoping for).I think it is perfect to read about 4-6 months prior to trying or if you have been having difficulty in conceiving, as the author does take a significant amount ot time explaining possible causes and alternatives.

I am an adult with ADHD inatintive type. I have struggled all my life with this condition.Howevere, I have managed to earn a BA in psychology and I am currently working on a masters degree.Because of my expierences in psychology classes I know something about scientific research and empirical evidence. This book was a major dissapointment to me because it lacks thesimple scholary research to prove the claims made by Dr Lawless. I am afraid this book is nothing more then modernday snake-oil that will cause more harm then good.

Concerned Mom,
2-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING!
There are many great ideas presented in this book about dealing with your add child, BUT the chapter on meds is completely off base.Let me preface the following with MY opinion (I am not an MD or an expert) that children with ADD need a team approach in helping them deal with the condition (if you choose to call it one) and there is a place for meds for many kids, BUT it is only a piece of the puzzle. Parents, teachers, family members, Md's, and behavioral specialists are all crucial. I happen to work indirectly with many of the world thought leaders and experts on ADD (ie. Joseph Beiderman, Mass General Hospital, Boston MA/ Harvard Medical School, ... look up his credentials). First Dr. Frank Lawlis is not an MD, this means he has not been to medical school- that is not to say he isn't a great psychologist, just that he HAS NOT and DOES NOT write prescriptions for these meds and has NO first hand experience with directly managing these meds himself. In this book there are many things that are completely false regarding ADD meds. For example he states that they only work for about 50% of kids.FALSE Let me cite 3 credible sources that disputes this (notice in the book that he does not talk about HIS credible source)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for every parent!
As parents of teens, we tend to think that--by now--we have pretty much figured out what makes our kids tick...hormones, immaturity, psicological issues...right? Well, maybe that is only part of the picture. This books does a wonderful job of going beyond that, to the neurological foundation of behavior itself. It clearly explains the ramifications of the changes that are going on at a neurological level in the brain of teens and how that, consequently, translates into "teen behavior".
5-0 out of 5 stars Not an Instruction Manual
Strauch's book answers many questions as regards my teens' behaviors. My last one at home is 16; I purchsed this book to help me understand what is happening within that skull of his.Strauch utilizes her research to not only explain what my own child is going through but also helps to clarify the behavior of youth today as far as impulsivity, criminality, and various other compelling and noteworthy up-to-the-minute pertinent and important information we need to help our teenagers be successful in this day and age.The book is written somewhat like an investigative report, with a humourous punch, and is easily read by parents and teachers alike. It is an enjoyable and worthy read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read for Parents, Not Neurologists
This was a good read for parents of teens or pre-adolescents who are not in the medical field or some related field. The author is not a researcher but a journalist putting together what they've learned about the topic. (Some parents may have already done this for themselves.) It's not as detailed as someone well-read on the topic may hope, but for someone just becoming interested, perhaps someone experiencing shocking episodes in their own home with their own primal teen, it's a good starter book!Glad she put it together.Hopefully there's more to come with more neurological detail. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL MUST READ
Frances Moore Lappe has done it again! She and her daughter have brought us a book that's given me renewed energy, hope, and spirit. Their stories, of real people making a difference, are invaluable. Congratulations.
5-0 out of 5 stars 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner featured in the book
This is a very interesting book. It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope Gained From Insight and Diligence
Thirty years after the publication of the highly acclaimed "Diet For A Small Planet", Frances and her daughter Anna Lappe have come out with a potent sequel and a beautiful statement of hope for a more equitable world through the world-wide spread of organic and sustainable agriculture techniques and locally controlled "fair" market modalities now challenging the status quo of chemical fed, toxic pesticide/GMO laden crops, and the lopsided "free" market capitalist WTO agenda that has been reaping havoc on the environment and small farmers everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book should be read by everyone!
Fantastic book! If you are at all interested in optimum health and well being or know someone suffering healthwise, this is a must read. It will change your life and the way you look at the food you eat. CANCER AND OTHER DISEASES CAN BE CURED-This book will tell you how. I have recommended it to all my family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gerson Therapy... by Charlotte Gerson
An indispensable aid for those wishing to use the highest cure rate therapy for cancer yet devised. The incredible cures for many degenerative diseases wrought by slight variations of this program are also described in this book. With the recent opening of a Gerson Therapy center in Hawaii, and with the Baja Nutri Care facility in Las Playas de Tijuana, Mexico, what's not to love about this amazing chance to survive the deadly big "C"? With a cure rate under 10% in America, why not go with the Gerson Therapy, with almost ten times the cure rate? This book is logical, orderly, and well thought out. It is not "easy reading," but it is certainly essential reading for our day. The present rate for cancer is five of every twelve alive today. Doctors are already predicting that the rate will increase yet again. Be prepared. Know how to prevent cancer, not just cure it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the only way
I found the book to be a litte condradictory. It acknowledges that other alternative therapies have cured terminal cancer via nutrition life style changes. It later leads you to believe if the protocal is not followed to the letter your cancer will return. This is simply not true. Whole foods is the key and detoxification. 5-0 out of 5 stars A concise and accessible introduction to available US health care
Department of Health Policy Management Professor Leiyu Shi and School of Public and Environmental Affairs Associate Professor Douglas Singh present Essentials of the US Health Care System, a concise and accessible introduction to available US health care. Written as a textbook especially for students considering a profession in the field, yet also accessible to lay readers, Essentials of the US Health Care System includes basic information concerning the effects of modern medical technology, the roles of different providers and professionals in US health care, managed care and health networks, long-term care services, and much more. Graphs, charts, and black-and- white photographs round out this excellent primer of basic terms and concepts; each section features a neatly summarized conclusion and a list of references for more information. Also very highly recommended is the author's previous textbook, Delivering Health Care In America: A Systems Approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never Sick anymore
Dr. Chopra is personally responsible for my complete change in beliefs on being sick. In his book, he states clearly and simply that the natural state of the body is health, not illness. And after reading that, something in my mind locked onto it, believed it and for the last 10 years my body has been living it! I no longer think I need to be sick to build antibodies to various diseases, I simply allow my body to be healthy- even in the midst of coughing and wheezing people. It is a mindset for which I am extremely grateful! A highly valuable read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A reply to the "nonsense" review
A gentle response to the reviewer who thinks this book is nonsense: For your kind information, Carbon is an atom, not a molecule. Now, I am not really a fan of Deepak Chopra, but if this is the level of your scientific knowledge, you hardly have any right to make statements about Dr. Chopras lack or otherwise of scienticic knowledge!
5-0 out of 5 stars Not Nonsense - some miss the point
To those reviewers that claim this book is nonsense are completely missing the point. In my opinion the author is expanding traditional Western thinking around healing. Not that we can actually study and manipulate the quantum level of our own bodies, but rather entertain new ways of enhancing our own healing through the power of our own mindsRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars Doctors Also Can Learn From This Book
What I like well in this book is the numerous tables, the questionnaires and the lists that summarize the essential data in each chapter.
5-0 out of 5 stars If You Haven't Been Feeling Well & Don't Know Why, It May Be Whacked Out Hormones
I love how this book was written.Originally I set out to just do some learning on Bio-identical Hormones for a friend and found out that I may have issues with my own hormones.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Hormone Solution: Stay Younger Longer With Natural ....
I found this book to be well organized and easy to read and understand. There is a wealth of information about the role of hormones in the body, and the consequences of not having enough as you age.I enjoyed the detailed explanation of the function of each hormone. At the end of each section, Dr. Hertoghe adds a one page table of a condensed version of his recommendations for easy reference. That makes the book very user friendly. The book has information that is revelant to older and middle aged people, as well as people in their twenties.I thought I could share this book with my sister, but we both like it so much as a reference that we had to buy another one. Thanks to Dr. Hertoghe for shedding light on so many hormonal changes associated with getting older. Can't live without it anymore! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better late than never.
It's taken a long time for this disorder to be recognized for what it is and it still has a long way to go in becoming more well known. The book is not an easy read, but then the disorder is not easily diagnosed either.Hopefully someone will write about Central Auditory Processing Disorders to suppliment this complex and intensive book for the sake of learning how to explain this highly unknown handicap to those who have trouble understanding that it is not a hearing loss problem but rather an auditory information processing difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
This book is indispensible for the audiologist/SLP/parent/professional working with APD.I only wish we could have read this one BEFORE the text books in grad school..would have made much more sense. Very nicely written, presenting of scenarios was important...more info to assimilate to your childs difficulty. May of seemed cut and dry to some, but if it was not, you would be reading the unabridged version and toting it on wheels. Not everyone uses the same categorization strategy...but that is the beauty of research and ongoing learning...take some info from each and you are well rounded.Maybe those who chose to go only half way through the bookand not PAST the case studies to the theraputic ideas are the same ones hoping for a quick remedy. This disorder takes time and patience and an informed parent.Good Luck..... challenges and good times are ahead. Thanks Terri for giving us all a small part of you....A fellow CCC-A

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the Whole Book Before you Review It!
For the reader who said that this book is depressing, consists entirely of case studies, and provides no concrete information regarding diagnosis or, especially, treatment, I couldn't help but notice that you wrote your review when you had only read half of the book. Read on! You will find specific recommendations for diagnosis, understanding APD and its relationship to language and learning, and tons of treatment approaches that offer hope for children and adults with APD. The case studies serve to illustrate how these disorders affect people in the real world, and you may see yourself, your child, your parent, or your spouse in them. But this is the only book written for the layperson that really, truly does provide guidance that is scientifically sound from a world renowned expert in the field. Next time, please read the whole book before you review it!! ... Read more

Jadie is an eight year old elective mute. She does not talk at first but, her teacher Torey helps Jadie to talk. When Jadie does begin to talk she tells Torey disturbing accounts of abuse that she (Jadie) has endured. Is Jadie lying? Is she psychotic, schitozphrenic, or really experiencing these horrible things? Jadie is afraid of spiders. She claims they can spy on her. Jadie believes she is a ghost. She is fascinated with drawing symbols. Torey believes Jadie is a victim of ritualistic abuse (satanism).
