5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life in one night!
For once, a book that is not about keeping him, but about KEEPING YOU!5-0 out of 5 stars good advice without the hype
This book is a refreshing change from the usual self-help books, which are typically are filled with the author's own buzz-words and usually over-simplified view of relationships. Ms. Engel explains problems that women and men frequently encounter, explaining them not only in terms of the individual's choices, but also in terms of the cutural and social settings in which they arise. Rather than give a formula for success, she helps the readers understand themselves better and inspires in them confidence for making their lives better. My daughter, 20, found this book to be very helpful in making sense of a failed relationship; I picked it up and found some good ideas for improving my own long-term marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read
This book has been as useful as multiple sessions of sichotherapy. It did help me out to find myself and enabled me to find the roots of the problem of losing ourself in the relationships that are originally coming from a lack of individuation from our controller parents. I was even able to discussed it with my mother and now I am eager to read more about these topics and it would be great if I could find this book for my mom in Spanish. I feel really grateful to Beverly Engel. ... Read more

Editorial Review

By now you've probably heard that antioxidants are good for you, but a growing number of researchers are beginning to believe that adequate or even more-than-adequate amounts are absolutely vital to our health and well-being. This book by James F. Balch, M.D., author of the bestselling Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, un-referenced and narrow-minded
As a well-read reviewer on this subject, perhaps I am being overcritical. However, I found his testimony throughout the book that the only purpose of antioxidant consumption is to desotry fre radicals to be missing the point of good nutrition. He tries to extrapolate all benficial qualities of antioxidant rich food to their free radical scavenging abilities, which he does not back up with valid scientific sources. He neglects the vast epidemiological studies attributing better health from of consumption of antioxidant-rich foods because of their high fiber, unsaturdated fats, and low cholesterol.5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info
If your looking for a book to help you learn about the amazing powers of Anti-Oxidants this is a great book loaded with plenty of info. Worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars What More Could You Possibly Need To Know?
This book is a tell-all source for the person wanting to learn about antioxidants and/or free radical damage. The only thing this book does not tell you is the absolute best supplements on the market today that contain all of the antioxidants listed in this book. But I can tell you that . . .... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best exercise adviser of all
Why do I consider this work to contain the best exercise- advice at all? The answer is because the advice it gives does not require 'exercising' as a special block of time taken in a gym, or with some special instrument. It thinks of exercise as a possible extension of everyday life- activity. We can do much exercise simply by increasing the pace at which we walk, or by lifting a few cans in the proper way each day for a few minutes. Whether we are gardening, housecleaning, shopping, mowing the lawn, climbing stairs, washing the car, playing with children , we can benefit physically by increasing the level of our activity.
5-0 out of 5 stars imely and Important--also Interesting
Recent news headlines said that a low fat diet does not prevent heart attacks, breast cancer, or colon cancer. I looked them up in The No Sweat Exercise Plan and found that exercise can help prevent all 3, along with many other problems. It's one example of all the important information in the book, and it's presented in a very lively and interesting way. Best of all, the book is very practical and specific. It tells you what, when , and how to exercise. It also helps you figure out which exercises you can skip because you don't really need them.I enjoyed reading the book and I'll keep it handy for reference. I recommend it very highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful guide
I thought I knew a lot about exercise, so I bought this book

3-0 out of 5 stars Do the program, ignore the propaganda
If you're a parent looking into treatment options, then I most definitely recommend this book as a part of your treatment program. It's one of the few 'step by step' approaches to teaching social skills out there, and it seems to make sense.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice component, might not be a comprehensive treatment approach
For those of you who like to skim, my 'nutshell' review of RDI: It's a great program for social skills and joint attention. It's not a complete program for an autistic child. Now for the wordy version...
4-0 out of 5 stars Great method, BUT....
RDI is a self-proclaimed deficit-based approach, meaning it attempts to remedy the core difficulties in disorders such as autism. Many methods such as ABA, on the other hand, are based around teaching specific skills. For example, an ABA program might involve sitting a child down and teaching them 10 new vocabulary words, whereas an RDI program might focus on teaching children to attend to their parents speech and actions so that new vocabulary is learned naturally (yes, that is a much simplified explanation, but a general overview for anyone unfamiliar).

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning vision of the next century of research
The case of down syndrome is one that is complex yet simple, and challenging yet easy. To understand the complexities that must occur to result in an affected patient is beyond most human comprehension. This book does a great job at highlighting the past milestones in research, yet focusing primarily on the future of study in this subject. Bill optomistically creates a nurturing sense of hope in all patients currently affected by this raveging disease, and instills hope for a better life, living life to the fullest

Powerful! Powerful! The bold, honesty of these women is just absolutely powerful. To read about forgiveness, pulling yourself off the ground and rising up, is just powerful. I am truly speachless. I finished this book in one day. I could not put it down. You definately do not need to be in a situation of drugs and alcohol to read this book and be touched. I reccomend this book to every parent, mother, daughter, friend. It is Powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, very different approach but similar recommendations compared to other books
If you are struggling to lose weight this book takes a very interesting approach. The authors are twins and they use themselves as human guinea pigs to show the reader what difference their recommendations will make on the human body. From a scientific perspective I found this approach to be fascinating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Out There
Listen, we all know the basics...eat less, exercise more...BUT this book tells you how to do this simply and compactly. The book is worth the money for the tips alone but it also offers great lists showing what a real portion is (something we all need to be reminded of), what foods you should have all the time, some occasionally and some rarely. They don't cut any food out of your diet, just explain to you how often you should eat it.Wonderful book for those of you who aren't looking for that miracle, wonder diet and just looking for something that makes sense. My husband and I now tell people we are on a new "food program" not a diet.We are losing without being hungry or frustrated and losing at a responsible rate.

5-0 out of 5 stars A how to "Talking to Alzheimer"guide
I first saw this book in the waiting room of a Dr. my mother was meeting with.I didn't have too much time to get into it then so I purchased it later and what a tremendous book, so easy to read and it had situations I am currenlty dealing with and the appropriate responses.I took it to my support group for caregivers and shared it with the group, some were going to purchase the next day. My thanks toClaudia Strauss for writing it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my "Must" readings for caregivers
Dementia a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the categories in which we usually place our fellow human beings. It can occur at the age of 55 or 85. It can happen to Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, males and females, rich and poor. It has not spared ex-presidents. I speak from personal experience. Dementia did not spare my mother whose 15 year journey into the opaque fog of this disease is told in my own recently published book. Tears are shed by husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters-in fact anyone responsible for the care of a loved one with dementia. TALKING TO ALZHEIMER'S will help all such caregivers to cope.
4-0 out of 5 stars good reference for Alzheimer's caregivers/family members
I am in my second read of this little book and it is full of helpful ideas about THE VISIT to Alzheimer patients (or anyone with impaired memory.) I am very glad I bought it so I can have it with me as long as I have my mother with me... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Body and brain are tightly coupled
The main issue of this book is that mental and physical development of a baby are tightly coupled. Physically perfect body gives more blood, oxygen and energy to the brain which reinforces the development of the body, which is most obvious for ages up to 36 months.

the book had thing i already knew, but it was just n a different plain. stuff like bondage and other new way to keep him and my self happy was very good and effective.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Little" Is The Key Word Here
This book is very small, so the word "little" in the title is completely accurate. The book is not utterly wretched, but has no new information, and is not comprehensive in any significant way. (Again, it is little.) The illustrations are the books strong point; they are not especially lurid, but are adequate to illustrating the author's points. The problem with them is that for every four or five points needing illustration, there are one or two photographs. The photographs themselves are in color and have good color registry.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good For Pictures

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource for Parents, Health Care Professionals, and Direct Support Proviers!
There are none better than Brian Chicoine, MD and Dennis McGuire, Ph.D to write a comprehensive book regarding adults with Down syndrome. The information in this book is founded by research of literature, discussions with experts from around the world, and from hands-on care for over 3000 unique adults with Down syndrome from across the country. The authors are the life-blood of the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Dempster, IL - a one-of-a-kind clinic - and are two people who are doing this work for all the right reasons.

I am the mother of a 34 year old daughter with Down syndrome, and this is one of the best books on DS that I have ever seen.It is well written in understandable language and offers practical suggestions and steps to take. The authors of this book have worked with thousands of adults with Down syndrome at the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Illinois, and they really know their stuff. The book touches on all aspects of life for adolescents and adults with DS.There is a lot on what factors influence well-being and how physical problems can affect behavior. It addresses when things are "normal" and when to worry. The book is well organized, so you can go to the sections that apply to your situation. And if the person in your life with DS doesn't have any behavioral issues now, this book can help you keep it that way.I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mosby's Textbook for Long-term care Nursing Assistants
I bought this book along with other recommended reference booksfor CNAs, and in my opinion this one is the best.It is absolutely a pleasure to read, easy to follow procedures, great color pictures and illustrations.Very user-friendly format.I was actually looking forward to study time using this book.2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date in body mechanics/transfers/safety
As a nursing instructor working closely with rehab we found this book out of date, with no changes in transfers, body mechanics that have been updated for safety throughout the years. The demos show transfers with staff using poor body mechanics, leaning over residents, not using lower legs using lower back muscles. Moving a person to the side of the bed technique demonstratess segmental movement taking the resident out of body alignment. There are up to date techniques for this. Mercury thermometers are no longer used. A two person transfer to the wheelchair in this book involves picking up the resident from the back and lifting with someone in the front with the legs. if a resident needs this then a hoyer a must. For back safety! The Essentials of Nursing Assistants by Mosby Second Edition, includes the same outdated pictures and demonstrations.

If you are interested in how food fits in with your life's purpose, then this book might be for you. This book suggests that you should "be mindful more not of the body for the body's sake, but of the body that the temple of the living God may be the better channel for manifesting the spritual truths." Many foods are mentioned regarding their inclusion or exclusion in your diet, but you're expected to take it all on faith since the book does not reference any studies, scientific or otherwise. The book also recommends to avoid microwave ovens for cooking but mentions no reason! Conventional ovens are OK. It also suggests you never eat raw apples. Basically, it's a bunch of advice on how to eat and live without any scientific backing. If you want modern advice backed by science, then try something else like Superfoods RX. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with numerous references
One of the best thought provoking books I have read on BP.
5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative Treatments Work!
I have been researching the drug industry and psychiatry over the past year and have attended a Harvard Medical School seminar to see what is being taught concerning psychopharmacology. What I have learned is that for generations, orthomolecular physicians have been curing mental illness by recognizing that brain malfunctions are caused by medical problems such as thyroid, kidney, and sleep disorder problems, an immune disorder cerebral allergy, metal toxicity, Candida infestation and enzyme and nutritional imbalances such as essential fatty acids deficiency (malnourishment). Biochemical testing can assist in determining underlying causes. Harvard's Dr. Stoll recommends fish oil to provide essential Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins as an effective treatment for depression.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really great book for anyone who is raising a veg kid, whether having just begun or long time vegetarians.
I am really impressed with the thoughtful ways that the authors have addressed raising vegetarian children in our culture.I am familiar with other books by both authors and so I surmised that the book would be about a pure vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, though those who include dairy and eggs in their diet will absolutely benefit from reading this book (nor is there any preachy tone about different choices). The authors have done a great job of helping find ways (some creative, some straightforward) to deal with family concern/conflict over diet and there is extensive nutritional information which is laid out in a readily comprehensible manner. The recipes are great- I hadn't expected so many recipes to be included with this book and I am grateful that they have been.My son and partner have loved everything we've prepared from this book!(Try the Tri-Color Quinoa Corn Salad!!) Growth charts...advice for ages infant to teen...comprehensive information on every page-- all written in a friendly and intelligent way.I highly recommend this book as an excellent resource for families raising vegetarian or vegan children of any age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should be called "Raising VEGAN Children"
I was very disappointed in this book b/c it really is written for vegan children, not ovo-lacto vegetarians. So to me, this book was pretty useless. The concentration was on how to get the needed nutrition without meat or dairy. It is much easier to get what you need on an ovo-lacto diet, but there was really almost NO info on this in the book. I feel that the book description and reviews have been very misleading.
5-0 out of 5 stars I use it every day!
As a vegan, and a mom, it's important to me to pay careful attention to my children's nutritional needs. This book is FULL of great information and meal ideas.I have learned TONS from reading it, and it has earned a place on my kitchen counter! :c)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If I could own only one book on Asperger Syndrome...
Honestly, this is a must have as far as I am concerned. It is a small book, but it is full of essential information that can help parents and professionals understand how to help individuals with Asperger Syndrome reach their potential. I have recommended this book to many parents and professionals in my work as an educational specialist and find it helpful when working as a member of an IEP team. Busy professionals and parents who advocate for children with Asperger Syndrome will find themselves referring to this book again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for a certain type of Child with Aspergers
Aspergers Syndrome is becoming much more commonly diagnosed in children. As an employee of the school system, I have worked with many children with this diagnosis in recent years. While children who are given this diagnosis have certain characteristics in common, there are certainly many differences between such children. The book is particularly helpful if you are a parent or educator involved with a child who has temper tantrums or meltdowns.Certainly many children with the diagnosis have this problem, but just as many others do not.The information presented in the book on strategies to deal with a child with Aspergers who has temper tantrums is excellent. If the strategies are applied consistently, they may help many children from repeating the temper tantrums or meltdowns as often in the future. If you are working with a child who does not have this pattern of behavior, I would recommend finding a different resource to help that person learn social skills, etc...
