5-0 out of 5 stars challenging
The majority of this book is full of puzzles that you can do with toothpicks...take four toothpicks and make a square then move two of them to make something else. The last part of the book has word/logic problems like the man with the boat trying to move the goat, the cabbage and the wolf to the other side.(Of course the problem is the goat will eat the cabbage, and the wolf will eat the goat, so how will he do it?!?)The first part is good for spacial reasoning--getting kids to recognize and find alternative ways of looking at the problem. It will be a good book for younger kids, but it's also something you can do with older kids because it's the challenge that catches their attention.I've even pulled in logical-thinking should-be-doing-something-else adults for quite some time with these puzzles!

1-0 out of 5 stars It is very boring
It didn't help my child at all.She is dumber now than when she started out.She learned more from watching Seasame Street. You need to come up with interesting art that will actually get a lift out of people.-anna poulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource of games, plus much more!
The subtitle for this book is "How games and sport help children develop."But I find it's much more than this!It is also a unique resource of tried and tested games for all ages levels. The introduction deals with tips for presenting games to children, how to cope with difficulties (such as bullying) and equipment. The bulk of the book is broken into three parts for different age ranges (3-7 year olds, 7-12 year olds and teenagers). Then the three sections are further broken down into game type: music, movement, beanbag games, water games, skipping games, playground games and so much more!Although this book is part of the Rudolf Steiner Education Series and written especially to address Waldorf schooling, it would be a valuable guide for every teacher, movement specialist and parent.I've never seen a better book on this subject! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Activities
I'd rate this book a high four or a low five. The reason being that the illustrations in this book are big and cluttery and sometimes the fonts used are big and cluttery. I find I have a hard time reading the directions for the activity because my eye is roving around the page so much. Maybe others don't have this problem? Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Please Stop
Someone please stop this woman from mass-producing such rubbish. All of her books are a waste of trees. It's not so much that she is a former Playboy bunny and stripper, it's that without any degree or training in child development, or any related field, she has no intelligent basis for her "advice." She needs to take a simple parenting class and go from there.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am glad to have this book
This year I have attended so many kids parties with my 3 1/2 year old, and now its my turn. I am so glad to have this book as a guideline. I have seen parents throw parties where the guests arrive and everyone is just sitting around, there is no plan. They put some food out on a table for people to nibble on and the kids just run around. No structure, no plan, no fun party. Maybe I live in another world, but I found the girlfriends guide a great guide to avoiding having a dull gathering for a kids special day. Weather Lovine wrote it or not, the book is a valuable tool and I will be sharing it with all the mothers I know....especially the ones who have been throwing those dull parties.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works for Me
I was really appreciative to find this book, because it offers a lot of concrete, practical advice and ideas for party and playdate planning. My favorite section outlines several sample party ideas, including the invitations, warm-Up/icebreaker activity, cake, food, party favors, main activities, and send-off ideas for several theme parties for kids of different ages. The party ideas aren't out of control, either--they don't expect you to spend several weeks with your glue gun (or several weeksof paychecks), although you could amp up these ideas if you were so inclined.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite!!
Used this with all 3 kids, LOVED it!!So many wonderful ideas, and also sections to fill out what your baby/toddler is doing or enjoying at that time of life.I love flipping back through it and it just brings back some wonderful memories. : )
1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me
I don't feel that I'm that creative of a person, so I thought this book would be helpful.I didn't find it full of suggestions for games; a better title might be "what to do with your life each month."The book had sections recommending that I buy a new outfit, tweeze my brows or other suggestions for mothers (inspirational, but not what I bought the book for).It also recommends chocolate pudding, peanut butter and other allergy/choking hazards for games with 6-9 month olds.IMHO the book wasn't helpful: it wasn't aimed at games, it was an oddly written "what to expect the first year."

5-0 out of 5 stars A million ideas
I love this book.It is separated into each month of your child's first 24 months and has creative ideas for play (and the best part is that you don't have to buy things; the ideas use items you usually already have in the home); short recipes (e.g. make your own baby wipes); developmental information; mom time ideas; poems or short songs.I am not a creative mom, so this book is wonderful. It gives me easy ideas each month. For example, the book recommends saving holiday card fronts that you can put together as a picture book for your baby to explore. What easy, inexpexensive ideas!I highly recommend this. The only slightly negative comment I have is that there is no index, so sometimes it's hard to remember where I saw some of the great ideas and I have to look page by page. But it's worth it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun while you travel
This book is a great solution to the travel boredom blues. It is full of each word games and math games and learning games all that can be played while sitting in a car on a trip. It goes beyond the normal abc games of finding the abc's on signs or on car licence plates. It provides activities, gamaes, topics for discussion that children of all ages will enjoy.

Do you dread hearing those words, "Are we there yet???" from the kids in the back seat? This book will turn your ride into a fun-filled journey, with enjoyable and educational activities tokeep childrenoccupied during carpools, day trips, and long vacations. 3-0 out of 5 stars Hmm - not that great!
I was really excited about this book because of the other positive reviews, but was not very impressed.A lot of them require money and resources not everyone has (if you live in Phoenix it is hard to build snowmen!).Also, depending on your own personal values of what is important in life, several of these won't matter for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
Jane Bartlett does a remarkable job of presenting spiritual ideas in a practical and approachable style that would meet the needs of families with a wide variety of lifestyles. Focused meditation and stillness are important skills with many benefits for adults and children, as Bartlett points out, but finding a connection with our spiritual nature in activity is just as vital. Chapters on play, body awareness, toys and pets address real family life.Parents looking for ways to nuture the spiritual side of life within their family's daily activities will find a wealth of ideas here. Jane Bartlett's obvious respect for traditional religious practices as well as spiritual expression outside religious dogma includes a broad spectrum of readers.A valuable resource. ... Read more
