5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent family activity book
This is a really well written and beautifully designed book. Each of the activities is genuinely fun and kid-pleasing, and not something you've seen printed over and over again in parenting and women's magazines. Even the categories of games are fun: e.g., waiting room games, hairdresser games, bus stop games, waiting-in-line games. The author put a lot of thought into this handy, purse-sized activity book and it shows. This is the best family activity book I've found yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-whining zone
I received this book as a gift, and carry it in my purse for quick reference. The games have entertained my 4-year-old daughter--and me!--at the doctor's office, in restaurants, in the grocery store, and in the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars 501 Fun to Make Family Crafts
We are enjoying tthis craft book.Lots of fun ideas to do with the kids!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!So many different projects in all seasons!
In this book, they grouped the projects with nice symbols and by season to make it easier for you. There are Nature Projects, Back-to-School Projects, Bird Projects, Sport Projects, Pumpkin Decorations, and a whole lot more! The Cool Paper Book Covers in the Fall Season are a good project for kids (as well as a lot of other projects for kids). My favorite project in the book are the heart embellished Valentine Day cards.I haven't made any of those projects yet, but I am sure I will have so much fun making them! :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars A gathering of winter traditions from many sources
Most people who celebrate Christmas know that numerous elements of our modern traditions come from older religions than Christianity, but the range of source traditions astounds me. There is, for instance, no one source of the practice of observing the winter solstice itself, of myths involving the death or sacrifice and rebirth of a deity, or of father and son symbols for the old year and the new. Many sources are cited in the book as possible origins of Santa Claus, of the giving of gifts, and the custom of bringing greenery indoors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tradition and ritual without faith
I've always loved Christmas. But a few years ago I deconverted from faith; I found myself, as an atheist and humanist, longing for a connection to the holiday I loved. This book helped me forge a new perspective on, and a new connection with, Christmas as a worldly and human celebration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching curiosity, self-control, kindness and other values
Parents who have infants through age eight will welcome an activities book which pairs activities and games which take 5-30 minutes each with a focus on teaching curiosity, self-control, kindness and other values. From a 'Scavenger Number Hunt' which involves common household items and can even be done in the grocery store. The 2,000 Best Games & Activities is an excellent collection of lessons on how to be a better person, couched as games.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for friends with kids / all parents
I gave this book as a gift to my older sister to use with my niece (age 9) and nephew (age 5).My sister replied that she absolutely loved the book; that there are so many creative, fun and thought-provoking activities and games in here to keep both her kids busy, entertained, and engaged. She was very impressed with the book overall, and for her to comment that her sometimes finicky kids are enjoying these activities says a lot. You'll be amazed at how many clever ideas are crammed into this little book. Many activities are so straightforward yet unique and thought inspiring; just great for working out those young minds when they need it most.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carry it in your back pocket!
This book is amazing!I knew within 20 minutes of using this book that I would do well to carry it in my back pocket. It is amazingly easy to locate just the right activity, set it up and watch the learning take place. It also helps me to use spur of the moment opportunities to the fullest. This should be given to parents before they leave the hospital with their new babies! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Reading Pictures
This book is an outstanding guide for the art teacher eager to teach not only creative photography, but how to connect, understand, and tell a story through a picture. This book teaches expression through exercises with video and poetry, how to read a photograph, to have children from different cultures learn from each other from self portrait exercises in the shoes of different ethnicities.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for teachers!
This book guides you through teaching literacy through photography to children, for which Ms. Ewald is well known. It is a fantastic resource for someone who wants to really teach the heart and soul of photography, as well as visual literacy - a great introduction to photography but even a seasoned photographer can learn something new from this book. Ms. Ewald takes you through her curriculum step by step as she would teach her students and gives you the tools and tips to pass it on. This is not a technical "how to" photo book, there are plenty of those out there, this book is truly a gem. I have used Ms. Ewald's book as the basis for my own workshops with children and I now have adults asking me to take the course!I can't say enough great things about it... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only thing has worked for this parenting book addict!!!
I have read over a dozen parenting books including Playful Parenting, Easy to love, Difficult to Discipline, Picking Your Battles, Kids, Parents and Power Struggles, P.E.T. and Unconditional Parenting just to name a few. This though is the first book parenting book, I've ever reviewed, because it's the only one that has truly helped me.
4-0 out of 5 stars 1-2-3- Magic

2-0 out of 5 stars entertaining, but superficial and potentially misleading
this book is a light read and mostly entertaining when the author reports stories from his own family. however, "the new father" cannot nearly replace a comprehensive guide to infant care. it is very limited in various critical aspects, such as when to introduce different foods, or how to care for a sick infant.
5-0 out of 5 stars The male "bible" for babies
The worst part about being a new dad is the amount of help you get.Nearly 0.The hospital nurses talk to you like you're from another country, and treat you like you're a lost puppy dog.Books with 1000+ pages about the mom, baby, pregancy, etc, have about 1 paragraph for "the new dad."I think that there has been SO many dads who have not been there for the baby that society has started to downplay our role.I hate that.As a dad, you go through a LOT of emotions, struggles, hardships, etc. And, most people you talk to couldn't care less - or throw the "well you didn't give birth" thing at you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it
It is a great tool for any new father. All the basics you should get to know NOW. Buy it ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of this advise seems intuitive
This book offers what seems like sound advise, however, for me, it all seemed intuitive. All the suggestions on how to interact with your baby, I was already doing. So there wasn't a lot to disagree with, but there wasn't a lot of eye opening info either. This may be better for parents who are dealing with a colicky infant or an infant who has trouble engaging with the world due to sensitivities. I didn't have these problems with my daughter.I would check this book out of the library versus adding it to my personal library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Terrific Book by Greenspan
I read this as a borrowed book and I agree with the majority of the previous reviewers as to its incredible value to parents.I completely disagree with the reviewer who recommended "The Continuum Project".That book describes a nice general theme but doesn't get into specifics.Greenspan's book is just the opposite...raising a caring child is truly more complex than just holding them 24/7.
1-0 out of 5 stars Building Healthy Minds: The Six Experiences That Create Inte
Very disappointing.Whilst I agree with the underlying concepts, the book is repetitive and arduous. New chapters, with interesting headings, merely repeat what was said in previous ones. The contents page tells the story and time spent on reading the detail reveals little new information. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A+ book for acting students
As an acting teacher I was thrilled with this book. It has lots of terrific improv games and ideas. I'm inspired and I know my kids will be too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Place To Start
To start off, I am the author of the book so take the "star review" for what it is.I just wanted to give you a little more depth to what this book is about in case you are looking at purchasing it.First I will tell you that I've had over 12 years experience of not only performing improv and owning a troupe, but I've been very lucky to teach improv to people of all ages and walks of life.I will be up front with my statement that no ONE person can teach you everything about improv.I learned from many people and took what I liked to form my style and beliefs. It is that style that is in my book and I encourage you to look at several books if you are really serious about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well thought out book
This book is amazing. It's beautifully designed and it is extremely well organized. I can instantly find the kind of activity that I am looking for (backyard activity, craft to do at the kitchen table, etc.) It's also easy to zero in on age-appropriate ideas, too. I have purchased a lot of activity books over the years, but this is definitely one of the very best.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Family/Kids activity book ever!
This book is worth its weight in gold! There are activities, games, ideas, etc. suitable for any occasion. I have a son and a daughter, am a boy scout and a girl scout leader, entertain numerous neighborhood children and bring crafts into my children's classrooms often.A great deal of the activities I do comes from this book alone. I have a full time career also, so I don't always have a lot of time to plan and this book makes it possible.Even if I don't follow an idea exactly, I receive inspiration for other activities/crafts and always find a use for any type of container, paper roll, rocks, pinecones, etc.So if you want a book that not only has great craft ideas but also ideas for groups, games, things to keep your kids entertained while they're waiting for dinner; then this is your book! Have fun and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I bought this book, as well as the FamilyFun Craft book.It is a great book with great ideas for a wide range of ages. There are so many good ideas, its hard to know which to do first!I also liked that it is spiral-bound, it makes it easier to look at the projects. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars READ this before purchasing!
I purchased this book and would like to quote a paragraph from the second page of the INTRODUCTION! "Finally, the games get parents more involved in their children's education.I realize that many parents are shy about teaching their children and feel that teaching should be left to teachers. In general, I agree; but parents do teach their children in many areas every day - perhaps without realizing it.They teach children to throw a football, cross a street, make a bed or a sandwich; they help with homework, and there's even a method of violin instruction that has parents practice along with their children. Why shouldn't they help with reading, too - in a fashion that doesn't interfere with school?"
4-0 out of 5 stars Buythem all by Peggy Kaye
I purchased this book after purchasing Games for Math, Games for Writing, and Games for learning. I was so impressed with her style and idea of learning through games. These books are true treasure troves.Day one of having this book, i had my children make Bingo boards with their spelling words. They were thrilled to do it, and we played a game after they were finished. One note though, the author does mention something about holding off on a select few of the games until they are reading, because it might interfere with the teaching method the teacher is using, and that parents aren't trained to teach children to read.As a homeschooling family i find that an ignorant opinion, which is why i rated it a '4'.Regardless, there are many great ideas in this and her other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars a pleasure to learn
We are a homeschooling family with young daughters. My youngest daughter has absolutely no interest in sitting down to learn to read and write. It has always been a struggle with her.At 8yo now, we have begun to get a little (maybe a lot) frustrated with each other and the learning to read and write process. We both inwardly cringe when I pull out the phonics books. However,Peggy Kaye's books:Games for Reading and Games for Writing have been lifesavers!!!These games are ALWAYS fun.My daughter eagerly looks forward to playing any of the games in these books. She will even write difficult spelling words over and over again just because she is in a contest with me!Who knew that competition would be the vehicle to get her interested in reading and writing?

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents & Teachers - This is a must!!!
This wonderful book shows parents and teachers alike how to develop reward plans for different situations, what works, what doesn't work, and the book even includes pullouts and printables. I am buying a copy for my children's teachers because we feel this book is good for both the kids and the teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars reveiw
As a clinical psychologist and parent of a 6 year old son, I would recommend this book highly to fellow parents, or professionals. It helped me get a fresh perspective on some common behavior problems (like getting kids dressed & out in the morning!) and provided many creative, fun, and positive solutions. It's quite liberating to turn occasions for nagging into games that foster independence and achievement. The book provides many specific ideas, charts and coupons that can be copied and used.I even gave my son's first grade teacher a copy of the book as a gift. She used several of the ideas with great success!

5-0 out of 5 stars A quick help
This is a great book to be able to grab when you need an activity. One thing that I really enjoy about B. Sher's activities is that the are low prep. and you know that anything you find in her book will be of value to the children.

2-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
Most activities in this book are only appropriate for very young children. I am a fan of Barbara Sher's other books so I bought this without browsing it first. Many of the '300' activities are chants with various words. For example:"we've all got a name, first and last, tell us your name and we will laugh".Another activity is to let the child smell food flavorings.Fun stuff if you're 3 but there isn't much for an 8 year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to use
Wonderful book for parents, teachers, baby-sitters, etc.Gave the Hebrew edition (available in Israel) to a friend who enjoyed using it to entertain the children on a trans-atlantic flight. I highly reccomend this book andothers by Barbara Sher, including "Extrodinary Games with OrdinaryThings" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good fathering, fine writing
Mark O'Connell tells it how it is.Using his own biography, his admirable relationship with his wife and his love and respect for his children and patients, we are treated to a thoughtful invitation to think with him about men, fathering and life in the family. How a man uses his aggression as a constituent of his authority in the family and how he recognizes and values his wife's role in its admissablilty and in its modulation is a core concept which O'Connell advances. This is a book about love between spouses and between parents and children.it is also a book about the ways in which sexuality and aggression are shaped in a responsible and therefore integrated way by good enough parents.Ultimately then, it is a book which is crucially concerned with how men bring their essential maleness to fruitfully and productively effect the next generation's capacity to love, to play and to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Voice We Need to Hear
It's been downright confusing, being a father, these past few decades. Most of us were sons of largely "absent" fathers without suitable role models.Sure, we had lots of advice...on one side from the Rosemond radical conservatives and on the far distant other the many and persuasive voices of the "SNAG (Sensitive New Age Guy)" movement. Not that their advice had no merit; but many of us just weren't comfortable with the notion that men were, well, imperfect women. Finally and refreshingly out of the wilderness comes the voice of Dr. Mark O'Connell with what resonates as real help and insight for us men trying to use our male differences and find our footing as effective Dads.He brings many relevant and poignant examples from his psychotherapy practice to illustrate his points. His (anonymous) clients are almost like fictional characters and together present a sort of universal parent with all their human flaws, challenges and, sometimes, triumphs. It's impossible not to see parts of oneself in these folks. He weaves their stories with his own parental adventures and misadventures in an engaging almost seductive writing style that makes an incredibly instructive book a totally enjoyable reading experience. If you're looking for a simple list of "to do's" for Dads, don't buy this book.If you're looking for a real, honest presentation of meaty topics...authority, discipline, aggression, violence, sexuality, safety, control...the real issues men and parents must deal with to be effective, then you've come to the right place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and profound
The Good Father is a life-changing book.Using real lives and real stories (including his own), O'Connell shows men (and women) coming to terms with their pasts as they embark on the project of becoming good parents. The book avoids prefab advice; instead we get detailed examples and straight talk on hard matters. The writer tackles all the big topics, from discipline (spank? don't spank?) to the challenges that time, and teenagers, represent.Especially useful is the frank discussion of aggression and eroticism in family life; O'Connell makes the point that physical contact is necessary and important, in the right ways, at the right times, between fathers and their children. The stories are compelling, beautifully written, and informed by a deep respect for the complex realities of people's lives. You can learn more about being a good father from this book than any laundry list of do's and don'ts will ever teach you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and Comprehensive!
From beginning to end, this book is chock full of invaluable information about the why's, what's, when's and how's of reading to our children. I honestly can't think of a more important parenting book out there. It just makes so much sense. And although I already do it, it got me excited about reading to my kids again and reminded me why I read to all of my babies in utero. (For fun! Who knew it was so beneficial?) There's just no better way to connect, bond and engage with children. I grew up with this philosophy that books are our friends (my Mother really did tell us that) and it's a joy to learn exactly why reading with our children is so important. I already love giving books as gifts and you can be assured, this book will be hastily added to my baby shower/new baby/1st and 2nd birthday gift list.I can think of no better gift for a parent than the gift of true quality time with their kids. A time to discover, laugh, tickle and snuggle. A time to sing, rhyme, interact and learn. Together. What can be better than that?
5-0 out of 5 stars Reading is Essential.
I am a bookaholic. I believe that "we first learn to read, then read to learn." A first step to achieve this is to fall in love with reading, the younger the better. If a child feels that reading is fun, they can develop a lifelong attraction to books. THIS book can help a parent learn how to develop that love of books with their child.
5-0 out of 5 stars Little book with Big Heart
The authors have taken a small subject and written an entertaining, thorough, incredibly well-thought out and well-designedvolume.It's very useful, because it both talks about the realities of reading to the wee (news flash: they're as likely to eat the book as listen, but READ ANYWAY...and here's why), and then goes on to make recommendations depending on subject your looking for (books about feeling

5-0 out of 5 stars good enough to steal
i had shown this book to a friend of mine later that evening the book had turned up missing.. hence the title good enough to steal. loved the book so i bought yet another copy.i had shared this book with my childs first grade glass and did the bee craft with them which was simple for little hands to create. i look into this book constantly for ideas crafts and bedtime stories to read to my kids.one of my favorite things about this book is that not all of the crafts take a long time to accomplish so i can hang them up wear them give as gifts and move on to our countless other crafts to work on :) simply loved the story of how april fools dat came about the craft that went a long with it as well very cute/ informative. the instructions on how to do the crafts are detailed and easy to follow especially love the full size templates if my second copy gets stolen.. i will have to buy a third it is a book that is worthy of repeat purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed my browse test!
whenever i order from amazon i browse all my new books.usually I like all of them enough to keep them, but just in case i want to return something I dont like, i want the option.I bought this book, and festivals family and food and the childrens year.THIS was what i was expecting out of the other TWO combined.I am actually thinking of making my first return on the other two due to my disapointment of them.Maybe it was their layout or something, but they just were not up to par for me.This however wa delightful to browse.I love th fact that the co authers come from different (all be it all european) regions.Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overflowing with great ideas!
Brimming with stories, poems, songs, and things to make and cook, this book offers itself as a friendly guide to the seasonal round of festivals.Arranged by season, each chapter includes a calendar of holidays to celebrateand, believe me, there are enough to keep you partying all year long! Some of my favorites are the more obscure ones that have fallen out of favor in our modern world, such as Shrove Tuesday celebrated prior to Lent, Whitsunday, and St. Nicholas Day.This book has so many ideas, you can't possibly do them in one year and that's why it's such a value. As I have, you will return to it again and again. ...
