5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool for Teaching Kids How to Manage Conflict
This volume, written by Corlette Sande, the wife of Ken Sande, who authored the Peacemaker, is another resource from Peacemaker Ministries that applies biblical principles of peacemaking to the unique challenges of intermediate and middle school students. The Teacher/Student Manual is designed in a workbook format, and the appendices can be photocopied for child or student use. Student Activity Books are also available for each of the twelve lesson series. This is excellent material to be used in Christian schools, home schools, Bible classes, or better yet in the home as parents and children study and practice the principles together.

4-0 out of 5 stars THANK-YOU!,Our family is happily at PEACE!
Our family received this book recently from a dear friend. This book and Student Activity Booklets are amazing. They have clearly equipped our family and especially our four children with skills to prevent and resolveconflict in a constructive and biblically faithful manner. We are spendingless time fussing and feuding and more time enjoying true family fun. Thumbs Up!

5-0 out of 5 stars 17 years of youth work: this is the best youth material yet
I have been in youth work for 17 years and this is the best youth material I have found.Corlette Sande has put together Biblical advice and principles that will help any child understand conflict resolution as Godsees it.I was so impressed by the material that I bought her husbandsbook and have begun to share with our congregation how God has called us tobe Peacemakers and the steps God has given to us to insure this goal. As achristian counselor I was ecstatic to find material that I could agree withthat so well done.I have never recommended any other youth material buthave called all of my fellow youth workers, counselors, and homeschoolersand have recommended this material. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally well organized and thorough.
This outstanding book for parents and caregivers of two year olds is the third in a series. It offers activities that promote total child development, including physical, mental, and the creative aspects oflearning. The organization into easily located categories makes it easy toquickly locate an appropriate activity. As a grandparent-caregiver who usedthe books for Baby and One-year olds, I am pleased to find that theactivities are just as well thought-out and age appropriate in this book asin the other two. The instructions are very clear and there are enoughactivities that even if only half of them were tried you would never runout of interesting things to do. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title
This book has an over-reaching title and at best is a catalog that describes toys.Placing the words "special needs" in the title implies that it would provide specific pointers for helping children with all sorts and degrees of disabilities like CP, visual impairments, hearing impairments, deafblindness, mental retardation, etc. and might at least have a section on augmentative communications. It offers VERY LITTLE on these topics. As for the dialogues, I found them to be of poor quality and contrary to other stuff I have read. Some of the dialogues for a child who hasn't begun to talk have tons of words and lots of adjectives yet later the same book suggests that teaching the concepts of 'up' and 'down' in the same play session might be too confusing for the child.I don't know what the author's Ph.D. is in but I hope it isn't in speech and language pathology.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informed and informative instructional guide
Now in a substantially revised and updated third edition, The New Language Of Toys: Teaching Communication Skills To Children With Special Needs by Sue Schwartz workshop presenter and developer of the Parent Infant Program in the Programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in the Montgomery County, Maryland Public Schools) is an informed and informative instructional guide which is enthusiastically recommended for parents and teachers seeking to teach language skills to children from birth to age six through utilizing toys to evoke verbal interactions. Enhanced with new photographs (including a full-color insert) showing specific toys that families may already own, can make at home, or which can be easily purchased, The New Language Of Toys also offers an extensive resource section listing dozens of toy companies, related books, and thematically appropriate organizations. If you are working with preschool children to develop their facility with language skills, the give The New Language Of Toys a very careful reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive look at fixing education in America
Focusing on the theme of extramural forces that contribute to the failure of school reform, psychologist Laurence Steinberg uses his expertise on adolescence and school engagement to posit that the achievement problem we face in the U.S. is unequivocally "a problem of attitude and effort, not ability" (p. 184), and nested outside the school's walls--primarily, in polarized parenting practices and a youth culture that demeans academic achievement, hard (academic) work, and internal attribution in favor of socializing with peers, leisure activities, part-time jobs, and blind faith in "native ability."
4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Classroom: Why School Reformed Has Failed and Wha
In summarizing over a decade of academic research into high school student achievement, Laurence Steinberg, in Beyond the Classroom-Why School Reformed has Failed and What Parents Need to Do, poses an alternative hypothesis. He argues that poor student achievement and low student commitment are determined outside the school and therefore, attempts to solve the problem of American education through school reform are ineffective. Steinberg offers that a lack of engagement on the part of students has pervaded American teenagers across all socio-economic layers and is the root cause of school failure.5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Those Interested in Reform
Steinberg's book is a splash of cold water making readers face the real state of student achievement in America by focusing on what is influencing our high school students. Through this 10 year longitudinal study, interviewing more than 20,000 students and their parents, and comparing these findings with other prominent studies, Steinberg uncovers the root causes for low student achievement in America as compared to students in other countries and therefore why school reform initiatives have failed.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for all new parents
A recent survey funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts found that 50% of college students close to earning a 4-year degree and 75% close to earning a 2-year degree were unable to understand newspaper editorials, compare credit card offers, summarize survey results or do simple math calculations. Why are Americans way behind Europeans and Asians academically? Why do so many Americans lack basic literacy and math skills? Why is it that only 30% of college students have the literacy skills needed to understand their textbooks? This book answers these questions.
3-0 out of 5 stars Smart, yes, but wise only in its own eyes
Many of the ideas expressed in this book ring true regarding children's learning process. However, be wary of such subtleties as suggesting as fact to your child that this world or things in it have been around for myriads of years. That is not fact, but theory, no matter how widely accepted. The book also advises against corporal discipline, with insignificant substantiation and a single footnoted reference. In place of the wisdom of Solomon, this book suggests mere time outs and moral explications, but relegates the chastening of tough love to archaic obscurity, despite admitting its use by 90% of parents.Perhaps some children of the remaining 10% will become the future intelligent leaders of tomorrow, of companies like Enron and Worldcom.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mindnumbing Psychobabble!
The basic premise of this book is that you should create a stimulating environment in which your child will enjoy learning.Sounds wonderful, doesn't it?Well, I thought so.I was very excited to read this book.As it turns out, I've never been so disappointed in a book.Since the title is "How to Raise a Brighter Child" I had expected that it would be a "how to" book. The author does give a handful of examples of activities and games to engage in with your child. However, in most of the book she simply regurgitates other people's experimentation and data attempting to prove that it is advantageous to teach your child at a young age.Well, I wouldn't have bought this book if I didn't believe that! I don't think the author had a single unique idea of her own.The 38 pages of references and bibliography speaks for itself!I did read the entire book while continually hoping that it would get better, which it did not.Save yourself the cost of this book.As I said, the basic premise is wonderful.Take that and use your own imagination to make it work. You'll be much better served! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Early Childhood Teachers & Parents
What better way to get your child reading, then by the Read IT Play it books. You can read the books with your children and then do the activities.I love these books.I have shared a couple of these books with the teachers at my daughters pre-school and they have now adopted them. They are reading the books appropriate for their lessons, and then doing the activities. Then the children go home and do the activity with parents. It gets everyone on the same page, and encourages the fund and excitement of reading. These books are inventive and a great stocking stuffer or basket stuffer.Give the gift of literacy.Oppenheim will never steer your wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing viewpoint...a real keeper
This book provides wise, loving, Biblical counsel to parents who are searching for direction.Reading this book requires concentration, but it is well worth it.Mr. Trumbull writes with maturity, experience, and kindness. His love for children is profound. This is an encouraging and helpful book.It is more of a philosophy than a "quick fix."A mainstay in our home library.

Mother of EIGHT, avid reader and God fearing woman.... THIS IS A BIBLICALLY BASED book.NOT the BIBLE but a tool of accuracy NOT CONTROL.BUY this book and SKIP 'What The Bible Says About Child Training' Because That book is NOT about what the BIBLE says at all!!!! Oh and for all the 'child abuse' criers---- give it a rest. The bibles' 'spare the rod and spoil the child IS BIBLICAL.CONTROLLING children is NOT. Even the BIBLE tells us that God (the father) DISCIPLINES His children out of love. No, it does NOT advocate spanking FOR teenagers....Hello,,, 'chidren'.5-0 out of 5 stars Single Best Parenting Resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Learn
This is a terrific book! The strategies in it are useful and easy to follow. In being able to understand how each student learns, you can better teach that child. Also, when the students themselves understand how they learn, they can adapt their studying to fit their personal style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for grades 5-12+
If I could rate this book more than five stars, I would.I've been a study skills consultant for many years, and a high school teacher even longer. This book I recommend to both parents and teachers. It comes with duplicating rights for an individual teacher's classroom (but the amount of paper you'd use if you duplicated it all would be prohibitive for most schools). In my classroom, I've picked and chosen the units I felt would be most helpful for each class. The work is clearly explained with good examples and self-tests.The illustrations are whimsical enough that they are not offensive to high school students. What's even nicer is that the students see the value in these lessons--they don't have to be sold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent rescource
I teach study skills to 7th and 8th graders--this is the text I prefer. It is clear and well-written, even if a little wordy.I teach it in units, having the students learn one skill, then building on it.Good Stuff!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Buying Twice!
I had to buy this book twice.I liked it so much that I recommended it and loaned it to a friend who never returned it.I purchased it a second time because I missed it so much.Very enjoyable reading with a great book list.I refer to it often along with "A Charlotte Mason Companion" and "Educating the Wholehearted Child."So go ahead.Buy two of each!Your friends will enjoy it/them too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best overview of Charlotte Mason methods and ideas available
I've been homeschooling for 10+ years and have been collecting books on Charlotte Mason's homeschooling methods for that long, as well. This little book is the best resource I've found for actually "doing" homeschooling in a Charlotte Mason style. It's not overly rigid or difficult to understand.Just pick a topic you want to do with your kids, open to that chapter, and you're off and running!I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who's interested in a child-friendly, learning-rich homeschooling environment for their home and school.I've also known several people who have been rescued from homeschool burn-out by reading, and implementing, this book.A+

1-0 out of 5 stars Not that great.
I did not appreciate this book.It is an uptight and rigid book, which contains misinformation. The author often presents her opinions as facts, and her theological ideas leave a lot to be desired. .Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, useful, compassionate and wise
Mather and Goldstein's book is a wonderful find for parents whose child is having a reading, writing, behavioral, or school problem. They simplify an often frustrating and confusing situation by asking ten clear and simplequestions which are then used to identify what to do.We found thespecific recommendations of how and what to do very useful.Chapter8&9 had very concrete and straightforward "language" things to do thatmade us feel like we were not just spinning our wheels anymore. This bookwas recommended by our elementary school after our son was tested.I wouldrecommend this book for people as they begin testing to help explain whatis going on and what they can and must do.Thanks Nancy & Sam forclarifying the process and making it easier to be an advocate for my child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basics butyou need to be discerning
First, you can't homeschool your chid for FREE.This is a bit of an overstatement. However, there is much free material on the internet such as Bartleby's and Project Gutenberg, among lots of others that provide free books. However, you do want to have some sort of hard copy because young people need objects in their lives to help them in their discover of the world, not just information. This book does do a good service demonstrating how much of formal schooling is spent on needless things like administration and 'bricks and mortar' and technological teaching devices that really don't have much function other than allowing a school to brag about its up to date pedagogy. There are other resources like books, workbooks, and readers that can be purchased VERY cheaply. Many classics, for example, are available for one dollar. You can even find them on Amazon. 2-0 out of 5 stars not free and not accurate
I always read the reviews before I purchase but didn't.I sure wish I would have!I have just tried many links listed.... finally the last one worked but everything on the site cost $$$$.Don't waste your $$.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete Waste Of Money
I was so disappointed in this book. I too expected to find tons of resources to help with homeschooling and instead found a book full of links that either didn't work or cost to use. There was nothing free about this book to be honest. You can't even get onto the website that supposedly keeps the book from being outdated. Instead you are left with nothing. Thankfully I was able to return this and buy something useful.

Written for both parents and professional caretakers, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down Syndrome by Libby Kumin (who has 23 years of experience in working with children with Down syndrome) is very highly recommended as an informational resource by parents, caretakers, teachers, and anyone else charged with the responsibility of dealing with Down Syndrome children. With a focus on speech and language development, through the stage of making 3-word phrases, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down syndrome offers in-depth insight, home communication activities, ways to help one's child learn basic rules of conduct, and much more. An excellent instructional resource, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down Syndrome is a welcome and necessary addition to institutional speech pathology and Special Education resource and reference collections. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Horrifying.
Some of this advice is good, but most of it is crap in today's world. My grandma gave me this as a kid and it freaked me out sincerely.I felt almost sick thinking of what my life would be like if I actually acted the way they tell you to.Thank God this stuff is not expected of women anymore...

2-0 out of 5 stars Karen Andreola's Poor Revision
I first read this revised edition, and then I went back and read an original unrevised version. Karen Andreola did a poor job in revising Mabel Hale's delightful book "Beautiful Girlhood." Frankly, I found her revision to have an unbiblical feminist flare to it that I wouldn't want to encourage in my (future) daughters. To everyone that I recommend "Beautiful Girlhood" to I always make a point to have them find an original edition, and avoid Karen Andreola's revised edition. It would have been better to have left well enough alone. =) Look for an unrevised editon--it will be a blessing and delight and well worth the read!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not inspiring
Sadly, this book isn't very inspiring. To me,it wasn't written in a way that would actually get you thinking, like other books I've read.Frankly, the author wrote this book with a rather dull tone. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but difficult to read
This book is very interesting to read but you probably would not want to use it in your homeschool as I was hoping to because the type is small and hard to readThis must be because of the way that it was printed or the type or printer that was used, I don't know. This is a shame because it is biblicaly based and very moral and spiritually uplifting reading unlike most of the begining reader material out there. If only it could be reprinted with clearer type. ...
