1-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Peters does not live in the real world of parents, teachers and kids.
If only it were this simple...every child would be a A student! First of all, if your child does not want to do the homework, they are going to conveniently "forget" about assignments. As far as communicating with the teachers about assignments, that will last a few days, then the annoyed teacher gives a lecture about "teaching your child to be responsible" (in other words, I don't have time to make sure your kid writes down the assignment every day for the whole year). The punishment/reward system does not work for a child who looks at homework as the punishment. This book contains the simplistic advice you would find in any woman's magazine. It will not work, especially with older children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proven to work!!
I have "Don't Be Afraid to Discipline". I am a teacher and I recommend it to all of my parents. They buy it, read it, and thank me for recommending something that helps to shed some light on what they do or not do and how to do things better.Kids need limits and parents need someone to remind them of all that good parenting of years ago. One last thought, I have attended some of her seminars personally. Made me a better teacher!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Common sense. . .
Here's the plan: 1.know what your children's homework is (communicate with their teachers) 2.stay on top of whether they're doing it 3.use a system of "consequences" (reward/punishment) to reinforce their study behaviors. OK---I just saved you $12.95!This book is only simple common sense; there is NOTHING innovative or helpful inside. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars nice warm-up
A nice book to learn about the state tests. It gives concise reviews of what kids needs to know, so you can check their readiness. The test taking tips are very useful for first-timers to raise scores. A very helpful warm-up for both parents and kids. Note that such a thin book doesn't do much to improve math or reading. That requires daily learning in school and study in home. There is a nice web site http://www.beestar.org you can use weekly to assess your child's skills step by step. With the fundamentals in place, this book is a nice warm-up.

4-0 out of 5 stars not entirely agree...
I have experience in college teaching myself. There are some important points that the author brought out regarding study methods. However, I must also say that some studying environment that the author mentioned in the book is too ideal. I know of too many average or poor family who can not effort to provide their kids that kind of luxury in terms of attention and physical environment. However, their kids often end up much tougher and successful. My point is that few things that the book considered important is really secondary in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Middle School Years
Having taught at the Middle School level, I highly recommend this book for the parents of children in grades 5-8 who are concerned about their children's education. Ms. Hernandez does understand these "unique" developmental years and how not to let the child's education slip through the cracks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Struggling 6th Graders!
I was bad in math, kind of bad in reading. I did some of this book and it's great, but the reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because in the 'Math' section, the formulas aren't that good and not just that, and some things are not include. But the biggest flaw is when they say what time is it in another place and they don't give a map to tell you! You have to look on the Internet for fricken' 2 hours to find all that!

5-0 out of 5 stars New views on Education
John Holt puts to the read a new perspective on what education really involves. He talks about a self-directed learning process that makes a lot of sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal contribution to education policy discussions
Instead Of Education: Ways To Help People Do Things Better by alternative education advocate John Holt (author of the 1964 book How Children Fail) is an iconoclastic and seminal work presenting a persuasively argued case for "un-schooling" from traditional classroom structures and curriculum fare, to innovative, self-directed learning as the basis for a truly creative life. A direct challenge to the complacency of today's educational status quo (even in this political age of "no child left behind" and school voucher proposals), Instead Of Education should be required reading in every Teacher's College, District School Board, and governmental education policy development office whether it be federal, state, or local. Instead Of Education is a significant and seminal contribution to education policy discussions and commended to the attention of education reform activists at all levels and from all perspectives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book for back to school!
I just read an article about Stacy DeBroff in the Atlanta Journal Constitution where she talked about getting organized for Back to School. I bought this book after reading some great tips she mentioned, and just love it! The book gives all kinds of advice about how parents can be involved in helping their kids with school. She talks about a variety of school-related issues, from homework and parent-teacher conferences to bullies and learning disabilities. She really covers all areas of school and gives unique suggestions that I would never think up on my own!

4-0 out of 5 stars Support for your child at school
School dynamics have significantly changed and parents are facing new situations. There's a new level of pressure at the elementary age from the restructuring of the child's schedule to the level of academic pressure. This book is written with clear information for parents and practical advice on being an advocate for your child.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Parents
I really liked this book.It has many insights and tips for parents with childrenin school. It included hints and tips for things that I had never even thought about before. The only thing that I don't like about this book is that it does not include much about small children - pre-k and K ... for those with kids in elementary school - this is THE book for you!I also love love love the Mom Book ... it is like my Bible! 5-0 out of 5 stars Straight Talk About Reading
As a kindergarten teacher, this book has made a big difference on how to prepare children to read. This book offers many wonderful tips on how to help your child as parents to better equip your child even before a teacher introduces your child with reading concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must book for parents of preshoolers through 1st graders
This book explains the difference in teaching methods for reading and how effective the methods are. It is written for parents. I appreciate the facts presented on actual studies that have been done on methods in learning to read.As a parent of two preschoolers (and I am not an educator), I am now educated on how I can make a difference in my child's performance in school after reading this book.I like the recommended reading lists by age that can be found in the appendix or at the author's website which is www.proactiveparent.com .The author stresses that the earlier you are proactive - the better chance that your child becomes a good reader. It has been proven that it is much more difficult to become a good reader after the 1st grade. The author points out that usually reading problems are not detected even in "good" schools early enough. She details what parents can look for and what to do when your child is having a problem at a very early stage in leaning to read. The author also has a newer book titled "Parenting a Struggling Reader" that is more for parents with children with reading difficulties."Straight Talk" is more written for parents of all children before their children read."Straight Talk" tells parents how to be proactiveto ensure their children love reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars What can YOU do to help kids learn to read? Here's how.
This book was truly spectacular if you are interested in really understanding how kids learn to read and what you can do to help! I learned so much from this book, if I had the money, I would buy a ton of them and give them out to anyone who has kids, will have kids, or works with kids.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book I needed
I have homeschooled for 12 years. I used this book to prepared transcript and portfolio for my eldest child who applied to colleges/universities last year. This book is excellent - straight forward, easy to follow, plenty of examples. You can not go wrong with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This step by step guide is a great resource!
We are currently assembling a portfolio for my homeschooled teen. Loretta Heuer's book has been very helpful. The authorincludes easy to follow instructions on how to document learning and present the homeschooled college applicant in the best possible light. The book emphasizes that even non-traditional learners or unschoolers can pull together a solid transcript. Particularly useful were the reproducible worksheets used for listing films viewed, books read, trips taken, etc. Heuer even goes into great detail on the importance of word choice, and her organized list of verbs is a nice bonus. I feel a lot more confident about the whole admissions process after reading this guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeschool Portflios
I have homeschooled for 5 yrs and we are always looking for better organization for our evaluations and now we will be facing graduation and then college. This book has been a tremdous help to me. Letters, forms, what to expect the colleges will be looking for as well as our local school when we have our yearly evaluation for the county. Full of excellent material, helpful hints and "how to" letters to be written to school officials, colleges, ect.and most importantly to me, how to put it all together so our best work and achievements can be showcased. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't suggest this book
I recently bought this book, and then promptly returned it. The opening line of the preface is an unclear, run-on sentence, which concerned me right from the start, and the book is generally overwritten, devoid of proper punctuation, and repetitive. As a result, I feel that using this book to teach writing might be like getting your cat to teach you how to swim.My family did have fun suggesting alternative titles before settling on "Any Child Can Write As Well As Me Do".

5-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to the home library
As a home schooler of seven plus years, we have been using the suggestions and ideas in this book for the past couple of years and have found them most effective. Our children enjoy the activities and I have noticed an improvement in their writing skills which I am sure is due, in part, to these activities. The book itself is a very easy read and I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It's a great resource for those just beginning home schooling and, for those already established, provides some new ideas to add to their programme. For those not home schooling it will assist parents who are eager to help their children improve their writing skills. Well done Mr Wiener and thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Writing Advice and Ideas
Descriptive, creative expression is the focus of Wiener's book. He gives many concrete examples of how to improve the quality of one's writing. This book is full of fun activities to encourage lively, precise writing--yet ithas none of those ghastly, contrived writing assignments.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic guide for accessing community/culture in therapy
Rigazio-DiGilio, Ivey, Kunkler-Peck, and Grady do an excellent job of describing theoretical constructs, processes, and practical applications for using community genograms in counseling in order to build on resources and access strengths within individuals, families, and communities. This book goes beyond the rhetoric of including culture and context as important therapeutic considerations, offering those in the helping fields a graphic tool to respectfully and collaboratively explore these dimensions with clients.I found it particularly exciting that the authors offered practical guidance for intervening at a community level and drawing from culture and community to enhance the liberating potential of therapeutic encounters. This is a "must-read" for counselors and therapists who strive to find ways to more intentionally consider individuals and families within their social, historical, and cultural contexts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This is a very good book.I am a teacher and a parent and of the many books I have read about teaching children to read this is the one I recommend most to parents. The author includes all the important things to teach a beginning reader and presents it in a way that is easy for any parent to read. She also emphasises that reading should be fun which is especially important in these early years. A good buy.

I bought this book to help my five year old.I like it better than others i have read because its easy to read and doesnt feel like i have to plow through it. It gives lots of activities and some good word lists to use and how to use them.Id recommend this for anyone who wants to help their child progress a bit quicker.

3-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of time
I am developing a reading program with kids of the country side. I bought this book with HUGE EXPECTATIONS. I thought it would help me to find interesting paths to promote reading and writting alternatives. But for me... all that is written in this book is very obvious. You can find that information only by using your simple common sense. I dont know. Maybe i am hiper critical but in my case, the book didint help at all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
Teaching middle school mathematics to inner city students is what I do on a daily basis. This book changed my approach and made a world of a difference in the performance of my students. It changed my perception of reality of unequal access to education in America for most poor African Americans. There is a completely different way that a student looks at the world when he or she may not have had a decent dinner the night prior to coming to school. There are a laundry list of socioeconomic issues that make it almost crucial to approach the teaching of mathematics to most African American students differently. Different motivations for learning is the key to this understanding the author's point of view. This understanding can be appliedfor success in teaching every subject. Changing a student's motivation by using things that are unique to his or her ethnic group as motivation does not constitute racism or advocate the teaching of it -it's common sense!
