An Important Book for Caregives
There are many books on how to care and plan for an elderly person, but this is one of the few designed to deal with the often delicate issue of communicating about those plans.This is an excellent book for anyone caring for seniors, either as a family member or in a professional capacity. I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an online medical supply business. In both capacities I work with many seniors and those who care for them.This book fills in an important gap in the caregiving relationship.I strongly recommend it.

Humane, wise, practical...SUPERB
It's shocking that this book is being marketed merely to professionals who must deal with the vagaries of the senior personality. It's simply the best book on the subject I've read.The author has a huge heart for seniors and those who work with them--professionals, certainly, but also neighbors, friends, children, grandchildren.

Worthless
One word-Worthless!!!!!!This book is about a lot of people's different theories on the nursing home industry, uses terms that my administrator had never even heard of, and basically, just makes no sense at all!And to boot, it cost me $50 with shipping.Do not waste your time even thinking about buying it...

Def. better than nothing but be sure to study everything and not just this book and the green administrators licensure book.
Much better than the green text book
A valuable study guide indeed.I passed the NAB exam a few weeks ago....and this book was a huge help.......a wise investment.Also, for what it's worth.......I had a'lot of experience in LTC (Assistant Activity Director, etc.)....I was also a State Nursing Home surveyor for 4.5 years before starting my AIT........listen up: the NAB is the hardest exam I've ever taken in my entire life! Well worth reading
The author of the bestseller Reviving Ophelia this times takes us on a journey through the lives of our elders. Following the lead of Bernice Neugarten at the University of Chicago, she distinguishes between the "young-old" and the "old-old". This book focuses mainly on the later, telling the stories of people who are coping with loss and illness.
Another Country:Navigating the Emotional Terrain of Our Elders
This book is written in a readable style that holds your interest.I bought it to help understand my elderly father who is suffering from dementia, but I found it told me a lot about myself and what I will want and need in the next 20 years.Mary Pipher's insightful and easy to understand.

Another country: the tourist perspective
Not being "old-old" myself, with both parents dead, I picked up this book out of curiosity.Piper does not mince words. Would Give Even More Stars If I Could
The information in this book is invaluable for anyone who has a difficult older parent.It takes you through a number of scenarios and then shows you how to better deal with those situations.Just reading this book and incorporating some of the suggestions has taken a huge weight off of my shoulders.

The book really didn't offer much that I hadn't read many times over on relating to difficult people.

Overwhelming Help in a crisis time of need
7-22-05-- Recently I found myself along with 3 other siblings and spouses thrust into new uncharted waters in a totally new season of our lives. Suddenly and without any training we were and continue to this day having to take care of my aging parents. I for one will freely admit that as a child I was never trained, prepared, nor exceptionally gifted to undertake such a task. It is just not the type of thing that you can ever really get to a line and say ready...set...go...and do it very well. Elderly health care in 2005 does not always afford us the luxury of any long preparation either emotionally or financially.

i needed it for class

More than the essentials
Essentials for the Activity Professional in Long Term Care turned out to be much more than just the essentials. The book is well thought out, and goes into detail when it is needed. I believe that it would be valuable to both the seasoned long term care manager, as well as those new to the field. I particularly liked the "Key Terms" and "Objectives" at the beginning of each chapter, which was great for quickly seeing what REALLY is included in a chapter, which is often difficult to tell in textbooks just from the chapter title. The book also includes facsimiles of actual forms in the documentation section, and there is nothing quite like seeing the real thing. A very well rounded look at long term care. Lots of pictures and charts keep things moving along, and there are self-assessment exams. I would recommend this book to anyone in long term care, regardless of their position. ... Read more

A core book, with a'lot of problems.............
I'm a few short weeks away from taking the NAB exam to become a licensed nursing facility administrator.This book was the core text for the 5 courses required for licensure (at least it was where I attended, anyway.....to be more specific, it was the only textbook required for all 5 courses) - - a little disturbing when you think about it.

I needed this
I did not lose my mother from death but from a custody battle and have not seen her since I was 4 years old.Recently I gave birth to my own daughter and from the day I found out I was pregnant with her I could not believe how much grief, hurt, and confusion that went through me.It was almost as if all of those childhood pains from losing my mother surfaced the day my daughter was born.I felt cluless. I raised a son just fine but once I had my daughter I questioned so many things and longed for that motherly affection I so long ago lost.This book was a GOD SEND to me because I felt like I was the only one to feel this way.It helped me to understand these feelings of confusion were normal. Thank you for this book Hope!

Too many variables to hold being motherless as the sole responsible factor....
Being motherless affects so much of who I am; I realized this through Edelman's previous book, "Motherless Daughters". I laughed and cried my way through the pages of that book, so I was intrigued by the publication of "Motherless Mothers".
Another Great Book by Hope Edelman
Any mother that is trying to navigate the world of parenting without her own mother there to guide her needs to read this book!! I love Edelman's writing style - plain, frank and to the point. Many times reading this book I felt like she was talking right to me....she has captured the profound loss all of us motherless mothers feel.She has a nice balance of writing about her own loss and feelings, along with the experiences of other motherless mothers around the country, with just enough research and statistics thrown in to not be boring. This is a compelling, sometimes heart-wrenching read, but any motherless mother will take comfort while reading this book in knowing that they are not alone. Really good for those interested in assisted living needs
I needed information on how to finance, build and market senior housing.The information in this book on elderly and handicapped housing needs is really helpful to me.This is well done, and those of us not part of the industry can understand it.

An essential part of your long-term care management library.
Pearce has done an excellent job of writing a sentinel primer for managing long-term care communities.The details are all there.Of even greater importance, the details are presented within the context of critical principles that distinguish the excellent community from the average or mediocre.As a faculty member responsible for a number of long-term care management courses at two schools of public health, this is one of a very limited number of texts that I assign as "must reads" for my students.

A Detailed and Complete Guide on Senior Living Communities
I truly enjoyed "Senior Living Communities: Operations Management and Marketing for Assisted Living, Congregate, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities".It answered most of the questions that I had on developing a community for senior living. I feel a social calling to provide for the housing and care needs of the elderly. The Senior Care track was adopted as a part of the Masters of Real Estate degree that I am enrolled in. This book was used in one of my classes. What a blessing!As I began to read this book, I realized that most of the "concise details" in developing a community are all in there.I am so amazed to see such valuable information each time I turn the page. Essential for caregivers
This highly detailed and easily read volume seems to cover every consideration and situation that could arise in caring for an elderly person.The emphasis is on in-home maintenance of the elderly, specifically parents, although one chapter is devoted to selecting and monitoring a nursing home.The book gives the impression of being able to prepare the reader for any situation and to help him cope with whatever comes up. That sounds like my story
There were many anecdotes in the book that sounded like they were taken from my own personal experience.It was comforting to know that there are others with similar issues.I came away with many new ideas to try and make my situation more tolerable.I would recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves in a comparable situation.

Everything you need to know in one book
This book is not about humor, or girlfriend-to-girlfriend banter. It states all the facts before, during, and after the decision to tackle motherhood beyond the conventional age. There are resources and facts about fertility options, adoption (the author and her husband adopted a child from Russia) and all the other challenges to be faced. It is very honest about the pros and cons of late-life motherhood, the risks and the rewards, and it is good to have all this information in one volume, rather than having to hunt for the information elsewhere.

It has everything!
I've read a few other books for women in our age group trying to become mothers, and they all say practically the same thing. I agree, this book is different and very, very, very complete without being prejudiced or insisting you do it her way! She also writes a weekly column on parenting called Parenting in a Nutshell that also has lots of info. Great Book!!

Tons of info I never thought of
This book has lots of info I never thought about. I am in my mid-40s and for the first time I am thinking about becoming a mother. This book helps me think with my head as well as my heart and try to plan for my life. I also realize that becoming a mother is more than just worrying about getting pregnant (you know, can I/can't I?). Parenting a child is what it's about, no matter how I get there (like adoption). Nagle is vey encouraging without overselling. She also doesn't pretend to be an expert on fertility. If you are thinking about becoming a mother in your late 30's or more, this is the book. ... ELDER RAGE gave me hope!
Not only does this book read like a fast-paced novel, but it provides real-life tools for the caregiver. Jacqueline Marcell's breezy, humorous style moves the story along and tempers a serious and heartbreaking subject--that of caring for elderly parents in general, and in particular those with memory impairments. The book is more than just one family's story. It is honest, insightful and full of helpful tips. (Through the Physician's Guide in the back of the book, I learned that my mother's sleeping pill 'can produce confusion.'
A Must Read If You Have An Aging Parent

A wonderful book full of truth, love, humor(most important)when dealing with ones parents, who are now in the final stages of their lives, with diseases, that are not recognized by the masses.Alzheimer is a horrible way to die, leaving one who does the care giving, memories, that can both be humorous, or devastating.I throughly enjoyed this book, and admire the author for her writing it. ...
