5-0 out of 5 stars A quick and worthwhile read!
As a Social Worker working with family caregivers of people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Stroke, I found this book especially interesting. I learned a great deal, especially as related to how Alzheimer's and strokes interact to produce a more acute presentation.I also admired Dr. Snowdon's ability to stay connected with his study's participants as individuals first vs. seeing them only as study subjects. Lastly, it was very interesting to learn more about religious orders, a world which has alwaysseemed shrouded in mystery. This book is all at once a research, sociological and narrative read.I'm looking forward to finding out what else Dr. Snowdon and his team discover from this remarkable longitudinal study!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Biography& The Science of Longevity Meet
Aging with Grace is an accessible and easy to read book packed with complex scientific and research data presented in understandable language. The author, David Snowdon, writes with a compassionate style that engages the reader draws them into the story of the Nun Study. This book is more than just a mere presentation of the results of the Nun Study and its impact on Alzheimer's research; it is biography and a truly human story. The lives of the sisters who participated in the study are made known to the reader and the reader becomes attached to them and the great legacy that they are leaving for humanity.Much can be learned on a human and spiritual level from the stories of the sister participants that goes beyond the scientific data and study results.Snowdon does and excellent job of weaving humanity with science resulting in the reader learning and engaging in science without becoming scientific.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for anyone at any age
Dr. Snowdon, who'd been conducting a multi-faceted study of a group of nuns for about 15 years at the time of the writing of this book (2001), presents a heart-warming account of his team's findings directed at the lay person.

4-0 out of 5 stars Contemplating Retirement?
Dr. Sadler has helped my plan for my transition from my first and second ages (achieving, accomplishing what others wanted from me) to my third age where it is OK to do things that I want to do. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Baby Boomers
Dr. Sadler has articulated a comprehensive approach for anyone over 40 to contemplate more personal fulfillment in life. This is particularly timely research and analysis as the U.S. is transformed by the wave of baby boomers just beginning to reach traditional retirement age. Boomers will, on average, live longer, more healthy lives than any previous generation. We cannot simply accept that life is "downhill after 50" when there is now a "30-year life bonus" opportunity in front of us.5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating, thought-provoking and immensely encouraging
I found this book to be stimulating and encouraging - rather than focus, as so many books do, on traditional concepts of 'aging' and 'retirement' as end points of life, this book illuminates the extraordinary opportunities for growth that can be available to those who permit themselves to take advantage of them. I've read it several times; with each reading, I see more parallels with my life. I would recommend it to anyone reluctant to surrender to stagnation and interested in learning about some remarkable, and clearly real, people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide for the Alzheimer's caregiver
This book is indeed "a practical guide" for not only getting through each day, but also making each one better than it might have been otherwise. The chapters on communication and cueing will help in developing skills that will help make each day more pleasant, as will the chapters on preventing stress and managing problem behaviors. I was especially impressed with the "What If" questions in chapter seven, for example "What if you went to bed and didn't know whether it was nighttime or daytime? What if you woke up from a nap in the afternoon and thought it was time for breakfast? What if you became frightened or lost in a darkened room?" (p. 62)--these questions help us to imagine what it's like for an Alzheimer's patient. All of this, plus the day-to-day, eating, sleeping, hygiene, and even exercise, is covered in this book by Barbara J. Bridges, an RN who spent fourteen years caring for both her parents. I highly recommend this book for all caregivers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice mix of the professional, the practical, the personal.,
I read this book during the first half of my 9-year caregiving ordeal with an AD parent and found it useful in managing many immediate problems as well as preparing me for the inevitable. The author does not devote questionable space to vitamins, herbs, medications believed by some to retard the progress of the disease but concentrates on the human aspects, looking at things from the afflicted's perspective as much as the caregiver's. A qualified medical professional, she balances practical advice with expressing her own emotions about her personal relationship with her mother. I would have to qualify my endorsement of the book somewhat by observing that the disease can wreak greater havoc, can take a more unpredictable, disturbing course than that suggested by the author's experience, which is perhaps a bit on the "tidy" side. Also, I would have appreciated more specific warnings about the practices of nursing homes as well as suggestions about securing professional medical care for someone with AD, especially when the patient is too sick to go to a physician's office but not sick enough to be admitted to a hospital. Far too often individuals in this position are treated only for "behavioral" problems (ie. sedating drugs) at the expense of their overall health and physical condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Midlife crisis of a fly fishing liberal
Really good fishing stories which are ,unfortunately, injected with liberal politics. Why did he have to do that? Apparently he doesn't know that people fish to get away from things like politics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Life Story
This is a great story about life told with a lot of information about fly fishing included. If you are a die-hard Republican and can't take a few barbs, don't bother and buy it, otherwise buy it and you will have trouble setting the book down. Editorial Review

When Jimmy Carter left the White House in 1981, he and his wife, Rosalynn, had to face the same questions many elder Americans encounter when retirement approaches: "How could we accommodate the unpleasant circumstances that had been forced on us? What were our assets and abilities? What were the dependable factors in a good life, and how could we recognize and develop them? Was it at all possible for us to be as satisfied in the future as we had been during some of our most interesting, adventurous, and successful times? Did we have anything much to offer in the years ahead?" In the years since, both Carters have become internationally recognized for their work as authors, teachers, and humanitarians, but as Carter amiably insists in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to enjoy being an old kokker
Simple, plain, clear good advice enlived by personal example and story. This is agood book about aging wisely, retaining one's powers as best as one can through the senior years. Former President Carter involuntarily forced to retire at fifty- six faced a double - crisis , identity and financial. He almost lost the family land and farm, but was savedwhen his peanut holdings were bought by a large consortium. He and his wife Rosalyn became active in new ways, as university teachers, writers, volunteer builders of one home for a needy person each year.

THE VIRTUES OF AGING by Jimmy Carter
1-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps he's aged too long
Jimmy Carter used to be my favorite ex-president. Now, it seems he has aged beyond the point at which he can reason clearly. He goes on Larry King to criticize a former colleague (Zell Miller) for standing in support of the President, AND writes a book, for which he will probably make millions of dollars, to do more of the same. He is using his roles as elder statesman (well-deserved) and Nobel Laureate (well-deserved) to undermine our country; but seems to have forgotten that he was impotent while our hostages were held in Iran for 444 days. You know the saying: "them what can't do, teach". If one of the virtues of aging is exploitation of public opinion for your own advantage (or that of your party), Jimmy Carter is VERY virtuous. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Readable, practical,
"Circles of Care" is one of a slowly-but-surely growing number of books exploring the blessings of honoring one's aged loved ones by providing in-home care. Reeve Lindbergh has considerable practical experience in this field, and this experience shows. The book is practical because it issues forth from the hands-on; the book is honest because it does not gloss over the rough aspects of caring for an aged loved one in the home. Reeve Lindbergh's "warts and all" approach to this subject matter is a high part of the book's appeal and value.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Practical and Personal Advice
Circles of Care combines practical advice told through past experience that I can relate to with meaningful concepts of what caring is and how it can strengthen and deepen our lives. This combination elevates caring for a frail old person, and even being old oneself, from a stressful, "want to be avoided" crisis.Instead Ann Cason brings to the challenges of eldercare, based on her own extensive experience, a new view oriented to the reality of the relationships and needs that we have. She explains how caring for a loved one is an opportunity for personal growth. While showing what caring can be, she acknowledges all the frustrations, and difficulties it can create. Through very specific and realistic advice, based on the activities and routines that make us feel alive, no matter our age, she has shown me how to make up a plan of care for my parents. If you are a caregiver or have a loved one who is a frail elder and don't know what to do, are stressed out, or want to prepare for your own care, Circles of Care is what you need to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars COMMON SENSE WISDOM ON AGING
Ann Cason's book, Circles of Care, is a guide to the terrain of aging. It is filled with insight, wit, practicality, and wisdom. From the assessing of an elder's needs, through the nuts and bolts of daily care, to end-of-life issues, Cason draws on her years of experience in the field to provide helpful guidelines for caregivers. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Ideas
"What kind of activities are there for the Alzheimer's patient?" is a question that comes up often. I always recommend this book. Carmel describes all kind of activities: music, exercise, food preparation, crafts, gardening, solo activities, family games, and reminiscence. I especially like the chapter on reminiscence--with the life collage, memory book, memory box, and more. Activities are very important, as is explained in this book's introdution: "The more involved patients remain with the world around them, the more resourceful they become at finding ways to keep that world for slipping away."

5-0 out of 5 stars A goldmine of activity ideas
Thanks tothis book, I have found dozens of creative ways to keep my mother (who is in the middle stages of Alzheimer's) involved and free from boredom. The activity ideas we found in this wonderful little book have improved my mother's quality of life tremendously and havemade caring forher a lot easier and more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensable book for adults who have lost their parents
I first read this wonderful and touching book when my father died two years ago. My mother died last week, so I picked the book off my shelf and I'm reading it again. This book is invaluable for any adult who has lost a parent to death. I gave a new copy as a gift for my best friend when she lost her mother last year, and it was a great comfort to her. The author, Jane Brooks, brings touching anecdotes from many adult orphans together with her own experiences dealing with her parents' deaths.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
When I lost my mother very suddenly last year, I stumbled on this book. It was wonderful. It helped me deal with so many issues that I hadn't even thought of. I passed it on to my brother who then passed it to his wife when her mother died. My copy has been making the rounds and I suggest anyone who finds themselves a "Midlife Orphan" to buy it and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Label for the Feelings
In the blink of an eye, my world changed and I became a midlife orphan. My healthy mom unexpectedly died ten months ago.I thought it would still be OK because I had my dad, my world would stay the same because he wasstill with us.But five weeks later he unexpectedly died, I feel of abroken heart.I remember thinking it was now not OK - I was now an orphan. I found this book easy to read and contained many things I thought andfelt. There is so little written on this subject, especially if yourparents died within a short period of time.I was pleased to read aboutsiblings and what goes on with them as well as the part on inheritance. Thebook validated my feelings. This sensitve topic could only be approachedby someone who has lived it.Thank you Jane Brooks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story of Undying Love
We all probably know a Prate Marshbanks. He's a good person who thinks he's as tough as can be, but in reality he's a softie. Family comes first, not afraid of a day's work, intelligent but his greatest asset is common sense. We all know the type, and if by chance you don't, Tommy Hays creates this exact character in his book THE PLEASURE WAS MINE.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, touching love story
This is a beautifully, sparingly written story about an older couple dealing with the changes, sadness, and humor, too, that Alzheimers' disease brings to a relationship. There are several love (romantic and familial) stories in it; the husband and wife, the grandfather and his grandson, 2 fathers and sons, and an unmarried man and women. In spite of dealing openly with the the effects of Alzheimers' disease on family members, this is NOT a depressing book. It is sweet and hopeful, yet poignant and sad at the same time. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eldercare from the Heart
What an eye opener!Through this book, Stella Henry holds the hand of the reader and says, "I've been there, what you feel is normal, you can do this, and here's how."Gently, she explains the joys, challenges and pitfalls of caring for the elderly. She unfolds the changing relationships between parent and child and illuminates shifting sibling roles.Perhaps most importantly, she tells the caregiver (usually a wife, daughter, or daughter-in-law) when it may no longer be safe to care for a loved one at home--when creating a hospital at home still cannot give a loved one the care he or she needs. At the same time, she warns that not all nursing homes and assisted living facilities are created equal and that we need to become sophisticated, knowledgeable consumers in order to choose an appropriate care center. The Eldercare Handbook answered questions before I even thought of them.I have already given this book to six friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT DETAILED HANDBOOK ON CURRENT AND FUTURE ELDERCARE PROBLEMS
Five "Well-Prepared" Stars. No, make that Six Stars!! This book belongs on the shelf or a CD disc of any family with elderly parents, relatives, or friends. Or those approaching elderly status. The Eldercare Handbook arrives just as we are informed there are over 22.4 million households caring for elderly relatives or friends, with that number expected to explode as the 'boomers' begin living longer than previous groups. That's ONE IN FOUR households and that's why this book needs to be read now by everyone and kept on the shelf or on digital media for future use. We're all on the clock.
