5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best on the subject of aging well....
Was perplexed by a negative review of this book, so I wanted to find out, firsthand what the author really said and I am so glad I did. Nowhere does the author chastises older people who try to take care of their health. Just the opposite.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Creative Age: Awakening Human Potential in the Second Half of Life
This "easy-read" book offers both professional and lay people alike a very refreshing and encouraging perspective on maturity. When coupled with a gentle sense of spirituality and wisdom which comes from life experience, it should help the reader to establish and reinforce a sense of purpose and resilience that engenders hope and creativity unimagined by most youth. This book is to become a part of my professional counseling practice for senior patients to read and discuss as they search for a deeper meaning and ultimate purpose in their lives. In a sense, I anticipate it will help to set the stage for welcoming passions of an existential nature, heretofore unknown in many individual's lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to midlifers!
If ever there was any question about our ability to make meaningful contributions at midlife, this book will dispell all doubt! I found the continual notes (on the outer edges of the pages) encouraging, as they documented the multiple contributions made by individuals of "advanced" years. This is absolutely exciting, and gives me hope for the future! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good For Reading Aloud
In this eclectic collection of interviews and stories of "late blooming" women, the reader hears from across the spectrum about women who have pursued a dream, in spite of their age. Prill Boyle's writing style is friendly and the pages fly by, as she chronicles the juice she gets from her interviews. Between stories, her journal entries add perspective and sentiment as they serve to usher the reader between one person and the next. This book of true life tales is good for reading aloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Women gain courage from their sisters
Prill's expert interviewing skills and honest writing gives us a glimpse behind women who are successful.Who would know the struggles they have had, the obstacles they climbed over? Here women with very different dreams - from being a doctor to a writer to a peace corps volunteers - chart in detail how they achieved them.We are left with a blueprints that give us guidance, but most of all the courage to live our own dream.
5-0 out of 5 stars Its never too late to be what you might have been!
"Defying Gravity" is a must read for any women "of a certain age" who yearns for a new career but thinks she's over the hill. Each chapter is a different story about a late blooming woman who went on to live out her dream. The author's ability to find the voice of each "late bloomer" as well as her own journal entries at the end of each chapter makes the book easy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars future we do not want
We who are aging do not do with with planning. I think we all hope to go with that heart attack in our sleep. We all expect to be like Moses, who was functional all the way to his death at 120. Unfortunately, as we age our frailty and difficulties increase without warning. At least, without warning which we heed. This book opens one's eyes. It is a must read for everyone who is getting older each day - that is all of us! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars working with toxic older adults
This book is wonderful!!!!!!! It was as if Davenport knew my mother when she wrote this book.I am very happy that I got to read this book.It has made me very aware of my own toxicity. I now know there is some hope for me to change.Oh my God I am very luck to have been able to read this book ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read--So Helpful!
Real solutions and insightful advice for dealing with difficult elders. Dysfunctional families struggle with these individuals for a lifetime, now they can learn how to manage them. Another excellent book on this subject, written with a humorous slant is "Elder Rage."

4-0 out of 5 stars You'll know if this is someone you love!
When I saw the title I knew it applied to my life and my relationship with my elderly mother. As I turned each page I had the vague sense that someone had been eavedropping during the time she was living in our household. "Toxic" described her interaction with everyone who cared about her. This book preserved my mental health! It contains clear descriptions of the toxic personality and gives guidelines for dealing with people who have this world view. If you are struggling with a difficult sibling, spouse, or parent, read this book. Protect yourself from this condition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Food for thought, and the soul ...
This book explains that healthy intimate relationships aren't about the romantic notions portrayed by the media or in the fairytales we all read as children, but rather about knowing ourselves, showing up, being authentic, and speaking our truth in a caring yet honest way. Authentic Heart provides a refreshingly realistic take on mature relationships, and is written in a very clear and easily digestible manner. You definitely don't need to be familiar with Buddhist philosophy to get a lot out of this book, but if you are, you'll likely resonate with much of the perspective here. I loved this book so much that I bought a second copy to pass around to all my friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ronald Brill, author, "Emotional Honesty & Self-Acceptance"
If there is ever a Pulitzer Prize for a book about love, "The Authentic Heart" should win hands down.I have great admiration for John Amodeo's gentle yet powerful prose and lively writing style.I am inspired beyond words how often and beautifully he illuminates by example the significance of risking vulnerability and emotional honesty to achieve emotional intimacy in relationships. There is a genuine, moving wisdom in this book that speaks to people of all ages, not just those approaching or in mid-life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for boomers
I have long been an admirer of John Amodeo's work. A long-time therapist and counselor, he understand the dynamics of intimate relationships as well as anyone I know. In addition, he is an excellent writer--clear, thoughtful, probing. This book is timely. The boomer generation, especially, with its history of shattered relationship, broken dreams, and burned-out illusions, will benefit from its careful and thorough laying out of the eightfold path to authentic love. Amodeo shows us that real love, which means a deep spiritual and emotional connection, true friendship, and a healthy measure of chemistry and romance, is possible. It seems to me that this book is an indispensable guide for anyone seeking such a union. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Retired with Husband
In "Retired with Husband" the reader is taken on a journey into uncharted territory for baby boomers who are settling into retirement. Rather than an ending, it is cited as a delightful adventure into second adulthood, with new guidelines. Humorous and Empowering!
5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading
Mary Louise Floyd, herself a retired educator, community active, empty-nested mother with a retired-corporate-attorney husband, writes with a very special expertise about the challenges, strategies, and necessities of being a "first wave boomer" and entering the senior citizen years of retirement. There has always been pressure on baby boomer women to "have it all and do it all". Often that continues into the retirement years with "superwoman" expectations in "partnership marriages". Mary Floyd articulate defines and discusses the concept of "baby-boom superwoman", the "Gray Divorce" phenomenon, the challenges superwomen face with their retired husbands (and the strategies to deal with them); steps to establishing long-term goals and their achievement, all illustrated through her own experiences as on of those baby-boom superwomen. Strongly recommended reading, Retired With Husband is written with with, humor, insight, experience, and will prove to be one of the most engaging and informative introductions to helping women (and men) in similar circumstances master the changes that are occurring in their lives as aging baby boomers themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fifty-Year Dash
As usual, Greene lived up to his previous books with knowledge and humor. The book was receives in good condition and in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight Talking
I found this book's language to be straightforward and from the heart. It's easy reading, sort of like sitting on a couch with the author and simply sharing perceptions. Greene covers everything; he describes fleeting thoughts on the seemingly insignifigant and expands into the depths of intensity. The reader sometimes feels as if he is having a conversation with an old schoolmate. Perfect for anyone who is either approaching their mid life years or already in the midst of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars On target!
I'm not quite there myself, but having been a Bob Greene fan since 1976's JOHNNY DEADLINE, REPORTER, I felt that I had to buy and read this one in advance of my milestone birthday. As usual, Greene is right on target withhis observations.Read more
