3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but do you trust the numbers?
This is a good book - 3* to 4* you call it, regardless of whether it hits your favorites. While not the best, it is a useful addition. However, the book falls short in two areas.
3-0 out of 5 stars Why these places?
The data and information finished for each city seemed to be up to date and useful. The selection of which city were included was just weird.California had only three cities: the old line, expensive Palm Springs, San Diego, and Santa Barbara. On the other hand, Alaska also has three cities: Anchorage, Homer, and Palmer. How Alaska is beautiful and a great place to take an extended summer vacation, but I would think only a few people will want to retire there. It just seemed to be a random selection of cities around the US.
5-0 out of 5 stars An eclectic viewpoint of retirement
The authors do a fine job of covering all of the bases and a vast majority of the 50 states in looking at favorable places to retire. They do not come to the table with a predefined viewpoint of what a retired person wants. Instead, they take a "facts in brief" approach to describing each potential retirement destination and let you make your own judgements. Each destination's article starts with describing the median home price, percentage of population over 65, closest metro area, population size, and finally a short paragraph describing the "Best Reasons To Retire Here".

1-0 out of 5 stars False Advertising
Okay, I haven't even read the book, I'm simply reacting to the title.1-0 out of 5 stars There has to be something better out there
First of all, Bill and Claire Gray need to hire a good editor.Even a bad editor could improve this.Their book is so full of punctuation and grammar errors that it makes reading difficult and continually annoys.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent-Entertaining-Factual Retire to Paradise Guide!
Belize Retirement Guide has impressed me as much more than then other retirement guides! When I read it, I felt like I had a guide right next to me and that I was actually visiting Belize. The Gray's have provided a guide that is both entertaining and factual which you will understand, after reading it, could only have been written by someone who actually lives there and done that. They provide you with both the Pro's and Con's of moving to and living in Belize from their first hand knowledge and not armchair or internet research.I found the Belize Retirement Guide to be an excellent resource for anyone considering either visiting or actually retiring to Belize. If you have ever dreamed, like I have, of retiring to a warm tropical climate where living is much more affordable than the U.S., then the Belize Retirement Guide will help you beyond anything else I have discovered before. Everything you need to know is available in this complete guidebook.Just be careful, however, because after reading the Belize Retirement Guide you may find yourself calling your travel agent the next day to book a flight and you just may be ready to make it a one way ticket. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More than a collection of stories
I was assigned this book as part of my college course curriculum (in an anthropology of aging class) and it's the only "textbook" I have held onto since graduating 4 years ago.Timothy Diamond blends a wonderful collage; weaving the life stories of the elderly and their caregivers along with proffering sage advice and caution about the state nursing homes in America. This is more than a book, it's a call to action. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Different styles and genealogy
The authors would like to note that their suggestion of a college course for people interested in genealogy will work for those people who prefer to learn with others in a group setting. There are also many excellent website resources in addition to books,...Also, about another...the Social Security Death Index, there you can click on Order Original Application to send for a copy of your ancestor's original Social Security information (you can also use the information in this index to obtain birth, death, and employment records). Although the Social Security Act was created in 1935, a computer system reporting death benefit claims did not exist until 1962. Most of the records date from the 1960s. Many of these people were born late in the 1890s. So in 100 years, depending on how young a family reproduced, there could be as few as 5 generations (if they married at 20) to as many as 6 or more generations (married at 16). So you really could be looking for your great grandparents.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs an accuracy check
I haven't read this book so can't judge it as a whole, but I did read the single paragraph on genealogy. I found three glaring errors/omissions there that make me wonder how much of the rest of the book is any good. First it tells you to go to your community college and take a course on genealogy in order to learn how to do it. I think that's a bit much, frankly. Get a book at the bookstore or library, or even browse the web for information, and you can save yourself the time and expense of a college course. Then it tells you to "Find out where your great grandparents were born through the Internet" by using the Social Security Death Index on ancestry.com. First of all, the SSDI does not give birth places for anyone. The closest it comes is to give the state where they first filed for their social security number. Secondly, anyone retiring today has great-grandparents who were most likely dead long before there ever was such a thing as social security numbers. I'm many years from retirement and even my great-grandparents aren't in there.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!
Being newly retired at age 53,I figured I'd better find a way to keep out of trouble. This book is it! There are so many things, even little things, that I had not considered as part of my retirement activities. I have been engrossed in the book since it arrived, and as soon as I get organized,I will be off and running.I would recommend this jewel of a book to anyone who might need a little help getting used to a new life..retirement!! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars This book is for women over 65, not age 50
This is the bio on Sue Patton Thoele provided at the back of her book: "The author is a licensed psychotherapist living in Boulder, Colorado with her husband, Gene. She is a mom and grandmother as well as a woman's group facilitator, speaker, and baker of creative birthday cakes, who has recently become enthralled by swimming with free dolphins. Sue is the author of The Courage To Be Yourself, The Woman's Book of Courage, The Woman's Book of Confidence, The Woman's Book of Spirit, Autumn of the Spring Chicken, The Woman's Book of Soul, Heart Centered Marriage, and The Courage To Be Yourself Journal." Freedoms after 50 is a small (7" x 5.5"), 155-page hardback divided into 79 subject sections, each containing one to two short paragraphs of advice. The topics it covers are not particularly relevant to menopausal women, but they are fairly appropriate for some women in the age range of 65 and above. Examples of these topics include: dealing with forgetfulness; gracefully accepting the extensive wrinkling of old age; reconsidering having a spiritual life and tapping into the power of prayer now that you are approaching the end of your life; taking up creative hobbies such as writing poetry without worrying about how well you write; napping more than you did before retirement and sleeping as much or as little as you like at night; accepting that you need material security in your life; reveling in the fact that you no longer need to keep track of time; allowing yourself to spend lots of time enjoying your grandchildren. Mrs. Thoele has written this book based on her own journey through aging. Her comments may be encouraging and helpful to many women over 65, and, as such, I would highly recommend that she consider, in a future edition, changing the title to "Freedoms after 65." Most women at 50 are not yet at the stage in life that the concerns and interests addressed in this book are relevant to them. I would not recommend this book, then, as a 50th birthday present but it would be a decent choice as a 60th, 70th or 80th birthday present. If you do not open this book expecting anything particularly profound, you will not be disappointed. Its main benefit might be to catch your attention and point you in the direction of topics that you might want to do more extensive reading on. You may also unexpectedly find yourself taking Mrs. Thoele's advice to laugh more as you read her book, because many of its sections are weirdly, unintentionally funny. Prime example, the short essay, Roll with the Punches: "A dear friend and I were talking about the quiet joy we feel over our burgeoning ability to greet almost all circumstances with equanimity. Laughing, we decided that is probably the reason why our once-youthful, firm bottoms now look less like basketballs and more like the sand-filled bases of those clown punching balloons that were popular when our kids were young. Age is reforming our bodies to better roll with the punches!" Ahem. In case you might be looking for an inspirational book for women over 60 to give as a birthday gift that has a bit more "meat" in it than this one, I would highly recommend The Last Gift of Time, by Carolyn G. Heilbrun.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkabley Evocative Memoir
Reeve Lindberg has succeeded in giving us a marvelous journey through the last two years of her mother's life. It is also a very helpful description of what it is to deal with someone who is deep in the fog of an Alzheimer's like state. I plan to give copies to many of my friends, most especially those with elderly parents. Reeve's language is lovely and crisp in the strokes of its portraits. It is easy to see she that is her mother's daughter. I am so happy to have discovered this book and I would recommend it to anyone who is seeing or will see an elderly parent or friend through his or her last days and months. Tasha Halpert

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Lovely
This is a fast reading book concerning Mrs. Charles Lindbergh's last few years of life.Written by youngest Lindbergh sibling, Reeve, she tells of living on her own farm in Vermont, with a smaller house on the property her mother lived in during that time.Reeve Lindbergh is a wonderful writer - she doesn't need the famous last name to prove that. When she isn't writing about her mother, which is riveting for some reason, her writing of anything else in the book has such a fresh, emotional spirit behind her words.Anne Morrow Lindbergh, a legend in her own time both in flying, her husband, and her many published works, did not talk much in her last years. It is a story of how the family felt and coped with her condition, letting go of the vibrant mother they once knew.An excellent book for those who have been a caregiver to a parent or sibling.Anne M.L. was such a famous figure, it was both interesting and heartwrenching to have the privilege of reading about her day to day living. Thank you, Reeve Lindbergh, for sharing this story that you could have kept to yourself, but chose to share. It's a book that will be remembered long after it's read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Tribute
I have read Reeve Lindbergh's work before in her memoir, "Under A Wing". I was surprised at her candor regarding her father, and what was equally clear was her fondness for her mother. "No More Words", which records the last 17 trying and rewarding months of her mother's life, is a tender tribute that is notable for what it includes and for what it omits.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's our turn
As a 54 year old woman who sees men my age dating and marrying women half their age - I feel it is our turn to experience the same.I dated a younger man (my "boy toy") for four years - his family strongly disapproved of the age difference, but we had a wonderful time together until they finally got their way.I don't think cheap is the way to go.I do think grace, maturity, dignity, class is the road to take in this, as in all relationships.Be yourself, be gracious, be respectful, be mindful, and above all, be honest - with yourself, with him.If two people click, then age doesn't matter.I would never "use" a younger man.I would never "use" any man.Love is an incredibly wonderful thing between two people and age doesn't and shouldn't matter. If you find it - hold onto to it with all your might -- the wolf is always at the door.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grrrrrrr
I was turned on to this book by a young man who was riding in my cab one evening. The man, in his twenties, looked like Harry Potter, but he was far from being a boy.He told me of this book and the world of the women know as Cougars. As we read together from Ms. Gibson's tome, I knew that as a twenty-something myself, I had to enter one of their lairs. That evening with Valarie Gibson's book in tow, we showed up at a variety of bars. When we pulled the book out, we immediately grabbed the attention of every 45 year old babe in the place. Not only is this book informative, it is just as good as a 22 year old man for cougar bait!Highly recommended. ... "Rules for Aging" is not a one-time read. It is a book to besavored and cherished.Surprise! Not your usual "how to" book. Rosenblatt is not only a wise and funny man, but he is a skilled and talented writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rules for Aging
This is an excellent book. Initially, I bought a copy of Rules for Aging as a gift for someone who is turning 50. After receiving it and peeking just a little, I promptly ordered two more; one as gift for someone else and one to keep for myself. Rosenblatt's words are wise and very, very funny without being pretentious or offensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook on Retirement
The format of this little "handbook" is quick, accessible, and an easy read. The vignettes combine humor with practicality and caution the reader not to take even retirement too seriously. Shrewd personal strategies are interwoven with absolute common sense approaches to retirement.Anyone who is already retired or is about to retire will thoroughly enjoy the breadth of experiences related by many contributors, some of which are totally contradictory - - - but every approach works for someone out there. As I compared my own retirement experiences to the dozens of accounts in the book, I found myself chuckling aloud - - - something I don't often do during a read. Enjoy it! It's fun (and wise).

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking ahead -- and back
"How to LOVE Your Retirement" is the kind of self-help book I can really enjoy.Divided into topics such as timing, finances, health issues, selection of domicile, hobbies, and adjustments at home, it is a series of vignettes, from one-liners to paragraphs, submitted by those in the business of retirement -- the retirees, themselves. The book's success is a product of the personal quality of those thoughts, many funny, some cautionary, but all insightful and enjoyable to browse. It gives those of us in retirement good ideas to mull over, and for the pre-retirement folk it offers inspiration.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The third age" of your life
I found this book a surprising delight to read the candid opinions of other retirees. It covered the numerable issues that have to be dealt with and the highlighted areas with statements of fact were very helpful. Good advice book for future senior citizens at the threshold of this next stage in life. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Funny
I'm sorry, Zevin is just not funny AT ALL. He's nowhere near as good as Sedaris or Augusten Burroughs. What annoyed me the most was that you could tell that he thought he was really funny, and that just made me angry. Stay away from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh no!Zevin is describing my life!
I'm a bit younger than Zevin and he's already describing my life, so I got a glimpse at what is coming up.This book is a quick read--a series of short entries on topics from lawn care to home improvement to the breaking of those decades-old appliances from your college days to teaching students at a local college.Zevin is a master humorist who delivers his message quickly and with a punch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funnest book ever!
It is nice to know that is now cool to be uncool - and I can now laugh about it! ... Read more
