2-0 out of 5 stars Foolish photos
This book contains photographs of some of the women I admire most. Unfortunately, the women are posed holding a large sword as a prop to indicate their fearlessness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent mid-life - we ain't done yet!
After looking at three of the photographs and reading the first page of the introduction, I immediately purchased three copies of this book - one for myself, and one for each of my sisters. Now halfway through looking at these amazing women and reading their inspiriational stories, I am empowered and inspired.Life is long, and the middle of it is fabulous! My first book was published when I was 53 and my next one is due out when, God willing, I will be 57.So take heart all you "women of an age."The best is yet to come, as the authors of this book and the women in its pages will show you. You, too, can join this company in making this the most delightful time of your life!Give this book to every "Boomer Babe" you know.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, just for fun, read...
I found this book as an unemployed college graduate.I was trying to figure out my "career" options in life. This book didn't help me find that, but made me feel like there were others out there who wander, searching for their calling. It was entertaining and humorous, just a really fun book, written by a great author.A definite must read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, fast read
I picked up this book Friday night, began reading it on Sunday night and finished it by Tuesday afternoon.Rodney Rothman does a great job of capturing the humor of his experience living in a Florida retirement community. The characters he writes about come alive on the pages and I often found myself laughing out loud at the obsurdity of it all. I found the first two chapters a bit akward, but by chapter 3, Rodney hits his stride and doesn't turn back.Surprisingly, this crazy recount of retirement living at 28 is hilarious, heart-warming and poignant all at the same time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Insult to Sedaris
This vapid account of life in early retirement reads more like someone's notes for a book than a finished piece itself. I didn't find his attempts at humor offensive, vulgar or objectionable ... just lame. Very much of the Letterman ilk. The people in his story aren't the figures of memoir, he does a poor job writing about an experience. Instead, it's like you're listening to the wise guy in middle school who makes fun of everybody else. He's just talking smack about his friends. Something everyone enjoys doing, but that doesn't mean others want to read about it.

Editorial Review

This philosophy/psychology work on character and aging is not a self-help book but rather a self-perception book--philosophical, wise, and deep. "What does aging serve? What is its point?" asks James Hillman, and proceeds to examine those questions fully. The loss of short-term memory, for example, enables us to better recall the past and review our lives. "On the one hand, brain cells may be flaking off like autumn leaves in a deciduous forest; on the other hand, a clearing is being made, leaving more space for occasional birds to alight." Hillman also likens short-term memory loss to a warehouse packed full of the inventory of life, emptying the latest files "to preserve enough emotional space for evaluating what has been there for a long time." Other aging markers also have benefits for character, reflection, and imagination. We wake up at night not only because our old bodies have to urinate, for example, but also because our minds are open to the wonders and mysteries of night.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kept rechecking it out of the library..
After trying to read it for so long I felt that this was a book I wanted in my library. Not as nice as hard cover but the content in this book is excellent.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry I wasted my money
Instead of buying this book all you have to do is read the summary and you'll have the whole idea.He uses about 1000 words for every one that he needs, just to state the obvious, over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting study - Character!
I've enjoyed James Hillman in the past and when I ran across this book in our library I read it.The subject of character is such a - a - uh - hum - hard to say and Hillman does it!I didn't give it 5 stars only because I would get lost sometimes and trusted that he would bring it all together - which he did, mostly.Read more

From the first page to the last, this guide offers practical, hands-on tips for navigating the maze of eldercare. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST book on Caregiving I've ever read!
This book in superb. Having an ailing parent, I turned to this book for the helpful tips discussed on the jacket cover. But it was so much more than that....it made me feel understood. The plain-speak and thoughtfulness in the text made the goal of caregiving seem much more attainable....and less overwhelming. The stories and examples of others in a caregiving capacity helped me to feel not alone.I strongly recommend this book, whether you yourself are a caregiver or not, it is a must read book of the year.

2-0 out of 5 stars Act Three (if you have lots of money)
I was eager to read this book, but quickly discovered that most of the advice and insight provided really only would only be helpful to people who are dripping with money. Not everyone can afford apsycho-therapist or a consulting firm to give them advice on making the transition to retirement. How many of us can afford a private spa to cool off after workouts? How many of us can expect to find diversion in retirement by being on the board of directors?1-0 out of 5 stars A Self-Serving, Unimportant Book
In my opinion, The Third Act, a new book by Edgar M. Bronfman is a bust as an offering toward establishing a more clear, balanced and reasonable view of what retirement looks like and will look like in the U.S.But, first, give me a moment to digress.1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty thin
I ordered this book as part of my retirement planning. It did confirm some things I already knew, i.e. you need a plan, you need to keep active and you need to keep healthy. These are hardly new concepts. While it does have interesting interviews with well known, well heeled personalities, their options are quite different than most.It lacked any meaningful advice or planning tools for self discovery. It is great reading for the American aristocracy. But I don't qualify. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Care of Parents
Many of us are faced with the aging of parents and often the onset of dementia. Eleanor Cade's book gives us examples of that common stuggle and what other people have done to cope with this difficult transition in our parent's life. After I'd read this book, I gave copies to my sister who is a primary caregiver of our mother, my cousin and another friend. All of these women found hope and encouragement in the stories of others. Irecommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Care of Parents Who Didn't Take Care of You
Eleanor Cade's book has been an enormous help as I wade through elder care for my mother. It provides practical advice, straightforward talk, and especially emotional companionship. It's a really difficult situation, and we need this kind of support. My mother even read it and said it helped HER! That's amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars AgeDoesn't Matter unless you're a cheese
A serious subject presented in a humorous manner.Easily read, hilarious and thought provoking. It will keep you in 'stitches'. M.Phyllis HIll

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise, Useful, and Entertaining
While this is not a mega-sized collection of quotes (just one quote per page) it IS an amazing selection of time-tested wisdom, humor, and experience.I collect quotations; and this book was an outstanding resource from that standpoint, since the preponderant majority of the quotes were "keepers."I have collected 20,000+ in a personal database over more than a decade (an odd hobby, some would say, but I guess I'm pretty easily amused). While a few of the quotes familiar to me, most were fresh and original, and the preponderant majority were "keepers."But you don't have to be a quotation collector to enjoy this book; if you're looking for inspiration, "words to live by," (from folks who have "been there, done that"), or if you just enjoy reading books that give you something to think about and more than a few chuckles along the way, I believe you will thoroughly enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Words of Wisdom from People Who Have Lived
Every quote listed in this book comes from people who were over 70 years old at the time, so they know of whence they speak. This is a light read, but a truly enjoyable one. Turn to any page, and read sagacious advice on a variety of subjects, from well-known figures ranging from Julia Child to Golda Meir, and everywhere in between. This is a book that will be returned to again and again for its wit and wisdom. And, as we age, the words become more true to life. Age does not necessarily equal wisdom, but in the case of this collection, it certainly applies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Couples Considering a Family
Despite the fact that this book is listed as a textbook and that it is a scientific study from the 70s, it is a delightful, insightful, and pertinent read for anyone considering having a family.
5-0 out of 5 stars great book for parents & professionals alike
When Parents Become Partners does a wonderful job of being accessible to new parents and parents-to-be, while also providing well-researched information and recommendations for professionals who work with couples.Carolyn and Phil Cowan's research following a group of pregnant couples and a control group of couples who hadn't yet decided whether to have children is fascinating, and readers will certainly recognize themselves and their friends, family among the various "types" of couples that emerge.Given the enormous transition that takes place in a couples' relationship when a child is born, this book offers reassuring, realistic information about how to survive -- or help others survive -- the change.

5-0 out of 5 stars must read for the reality of parenting
This book is a study of 100 couples from pregnancy through their child's kindergarten years. It really put in perspective the challenges that one must meet to maintain a relationship and raise a child. It is not a how-tobook (thank god) but studies of real people dealing with life.Theconclusions not astonishing but interesting and occasionally surprising.Ihad trouble making the transition from lover-wife to mother-lover-wife andthis book helped me to feel that I was not alone!A footnote:This is ascientific study, complete with graphs and charts.Although it is not dryand quite an easy read, the format might turn some people off.I stillloved it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Funtastic and Clean Humor
Barbara Johnson is a joy! Her sense of humor and writing style make this an exjoyable book. Unlike most humor writers, her style is clean and wholesome...no vulgarities.Recommended to every woman who is approaching or is in middle age or older, and is looking at peri-menopause and beyond with dread instead of anticipation. This book is uplifting.!There is some humor that is a bit "corny", but it's a laughable kind of corny.Definitely "thumbs up" for this work!

1-0 out of 5 stars For Older Readers
I'm 49, post-menopausal, and I love the Golden Girls, Erma Bombeck, and The View, but that type of sharp humor is not in this book. This author's humor is mild and corny, with LOTS of capitalized words. You know, for EMPHASIS! That said, it's pleasant to read. Companionable, but not terribly compelling. A nice book for the nightstand, to pick up now and then.

3-0 out of 5 stars They Are Called 'The Golden Years' For Sure.
This book is "For Women Only" as the seal on the front cover shows. She is somewhere between Erma Bombeck and Fanny Flagg with her type of humor and sayings. This volume was written for those with a sense of humor but, if you've heard all that homespun advice, it's not so funny anymore.

Editorial Review

She'd cringe at the comparison, butStacy Horn is areal-life Bridget Jones. Except, of course, that Stacy's situation is worse:she's fortysomething, not thirtysomething, and already lives with two cats. What's even worse is that her cats--who aren't related, by the way--are bothdiabetic. She's having a midlife crisis, watches too much TV ("Look, I'm notsaying it's ideal, but I would call watching TV a life"), and is obsessed withdeath:Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I was waiting for the author to die by the end
I am surprised that this book earned the high rating that it did.I found it only occasionally funny, and Horn's obscession with death was depressing. She even failed to make me sad when her cat did indeed die.Another whiney "My life is going by and I don't have anyone" book. Boring- I'd pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars Same Boat, Waiting To Sink
Almost 40 here, 2 old fart felines- Chelsea (16) is diabetic with a number of itchy ailments, Shakespeare (17) has used the litter box about 3 times during his life- I've been cursed with the chore of rotating hand towels for his toilet leisure. And for the past 5 yrs or so, Chelsea has played kitty see - kitty do. Saves me a lot on the cost of litter, but I well make up for it with air deodorants and plug-ins as kitty urine smells 10x worse on a towel hung to dry while I wait for a full load to wash every 4-5 days.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not really about cats
If you like to read cat memoirs, this is only marginally a cat memoir. Two thirds of it is really about Ms. Horn and her obsession with researching cemeteries and interviewing old people about dying. And selling her Internet bulletin board. And the results of surveys she takes on the bulletin board. I was bored and skipped over most of that to get to the cat parts, which were sad because her cats are sick and one dies. We never get closure about the other one.
