4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Hits Home
Bought this book for my mother. She read half but put it away because it really hit home and she felt the auther was talking about her.she doesn't want to face the reality of her life or the reality of what the book is saying so she will not finish reading it.I find the book interesting in knowing that all older people go through this and it helps to see the humor and the understanding of aging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful! Humorous! Touching!
Who would have thought having those forgetful, sometimes embarrassing, senior moments could be so much fun--at least when they happen to someone else. I thoroughly enjoyed Karen O'Connor's depiction of the delightful roller coaster ride we take in the process ofbecoming "blessed with many years." Her humorous and sometimes touching stories provide models of how we can greet our advancing years with a philosophical attitude and a wry smile. Her comments and prayers at the end of each story help us put it all into perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful!
Karen O'Connor's new book is a gem.I found myself laughing out loud, nodding and then relaying her quips and common sense with friends and family.I've always enjoyed Ms. O'Connor's other books, but this is the best yet. It's also a book to share. Buy one for yourself and give 'em as presents "just because."That's what I'm going to do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Sexuality Phases of Men
The bravado of patriarchy and its reliance upon presenting males as strong, vibrant creatures able to take on the world when young, and equally powerful when old has always been a myth perpetuated as the alpha male syndrome.
4-0 out of 5 stars For the layperson
This book is really for the layperson. The book "Andropause Mystery" does describe evolving physical, sexual, psychological and mental challenges encountered by the aging male. It does explain hormone replacement for men and the potential problems. There is a nice chapter on the psychological impact of aging on sexuality. It is easy to read and understand, but I prefer "Aging Men's Health: A Case Based Approach" by the same author. No doubt, it is a textbook, but there is more depth and detail for the professional person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for caregivers
This highly detailed and easily read volume seems to cover every consideration and situation that could arise in caring for an elderly person. The emphasis is on in-home maintenance of the elderly, specifically parents, although one chapter is devoted to selecting and monitoring a nursing home. The book gives the impression of being able to prepare the reader for any situation and to help him cope with whatever comes up.5-0 out of 5 stars That sounds like my story
There were many anecdotes in the book that sounded like they were taken from my own personal experience. It was comforting to know that there are others with similar issues.I came away with many new ideas to try and make my situation more tolerable.I would recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves in a comparable situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars my review of eldercare 911

5-0 out of 5 stars A primer for those "in the desert"
"What Do You Want to Do When You Grow Up?" is a must book for those who are "in-transition," thinking about retirement, or uncertain about their present career path (the desert experience). For four years, I have been serving as a co-ministry head in my Church assisting those who are either "in-transition" or contemplating it. This has been my number one reading recommendation to all participants, as this book handily addresses the first step to be taken before one moves-on, the step of self-awareness. Without knowing you are and where you want to go, you are doomed to a very empty existence.
2-0 out of 5 stars Starts out great; doesn't deliver on its promises
The book "What Do You Want to Do When You Grow Up?" by Dorothy Cantor starts off with some promise.Early she says, "What we are going to talk about can be summed up as the capacity to grow and the need to choose....We will look at what went on before, in order to find some clues for the future."Later in the first section, she adds, "I'll show you how to pull those pieces together to sketch a plan for the next part of your life- the time in which there will be few rules, the time in which the choices will be up to you....Don't just leave the future to chance; do not assume that after you stop working, all will fall comfortably in place....design the years ahead, not wait for them to happen....you have within you, as we all have, the gift for endless self-renewal."5-0 out of 5 stars LIKE PLANTING AND TENDING A GARDEN!
As a counsellor, I have found many individuals discover "anticipating retirement" and "living in retirement" are two very different things. In the next ten years, I, too, will be "growing up"and facing this new chapter of my life. However, there are so many plans for my future, I only hope my health, financial resources and stamina will allow me to fulfill these ambitions. To me, retirement is like planting and tending a garden. First, one must plan carefully (you do not want to waste your precious years on activities that do not bring you joy and fulfillment.) Then, one should decide what plants (projects, hobbies, activities) to sow, not only to keep you physically active, but metally alert. Finally, one must lovingly tend that garden (nourish the soul, maintain physical health, and weed the emotional clutter from the past.) If you have lost a spouse, partner or soul-mate during this planting season, it is important to grieve, but it is equally important to know when to let go and when it is time to plant a new garden.Remember, time waits for no one. Only then, will one be prepared to start the next chapter of their life. We all need to have hopes, goals and dreams, no matter what our age. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A prescription for a better medical care system as well as for us
Denial of Aging is both a call to arms and a personal guide. It connects two themes: 1) most of us will become infirm eventually; 2) when that happens, our medical care system will fail us, often worsening quality of life instead of improving it.Two kinds of failures are Medicare rules that favor institutional care over care at home, and a fixation on (expensive) high tech treatments that have a low chance of success in the infirm elderly, but that carry a high rate of complications.Dr. Gillick shows that we can avoid some of these problems through individual choices, but that others require concerted political action -- for instance, making Medicare more responsive to the needs of the infirm elderly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on aging...Must read for boomers, MDs,RNs, and anyone growing old...
Whether you are a boomer about to face aging or a clinician advising patients, you will age more gracefully by reading this extremely readable and well-written book by one of this country's foremost geriatricians. As in her other books, Muriel Gillick makes the stories come alive in technicolor, which is no easy task when nursing home and senility are the subject matter. And that's exactly the point: Dr. Gillick breaks the aging stereotypes that most of us conjure when thinking about aging. Whether it's preventive medicine, health policy, or just what stance one should have towards growing old, you will walk away with a more informed and humane understanding of what aging means and how we can all live our life's final few chapters gracefully. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a powerful book
I agree with the previous reviewer that this book is a celebration of aging, but I'd also call attention to how incisive it is about aging as suffering in our society: and how convincing I found it on replacing despair with quiet exultation. Henri Nouwen always moves me with the deep simplicity of his writing. And the beautiful photographs intervene effectively in the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know in one book
This book is not about humor, or girlfriend-to-girlfriend banter. It states all the facts before, during, and after the decision to tackle motherhood beyond the conventional age. There are resources and facts about fertility options, adoption (the author and her husband adopted a child from Russia) and all the other challenges to be faced. It is very honest about the pros and cons of late-life motherhood, the risks and the rewards, and it is good to have all this information in one volume, rather than having to hunt for the information elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars It has everything!
I've read a few other books for women in our age group trying to become mothers, and they all say practically the same thing. I agree, this book is different and very, very, very complete without being prejudiced or insisting you do it her way! She also writes a weekly column on parenting called Parenting in a Nutshell that also has lots of info. Great Book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of info I never thought of
This book has lots of info I never thought about. I am in my mid-40s and for the first time I am thinking about becoming a mother. This book helps me think with my head as well as my heart and try to plan for my life. I also realize that becoming a mother is more than just worrying about getting pregnant (you know, can I/can't I?). Parenting a child is what it's about, no matter how I get there (like adoption). Nagle is vey encouraging without overselling. She also doesn't pretend to be an expert on fertility. If you are thinking about becoming a mother in your late 30's or more, this is the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ELDER RAGE gave me hope!
Not only does this book read like a fast-paced novel, but it provides real-life tools for the caregiver. Jacqueline Marcell's breezy, humorous style moves the story along and tempers a serious and heartbreaking subject--that of caring for elderly parents in general, and in particular those with memory impairments. The book is more than just one family's story. It is honest, insightful and full of helpful tips. (Through the Physician's Guide in the back of the book, I learned that my mother's sleeping pill 'can produce confusion.'
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read If You Have An Aging Parent
Jacqueline Marcell has given us a detailed roadmap on caring for aging parents. She gives us the benefit of her experience as a caretaker for both her father and mother. The book is riveting, emotional, funny, and filled with practical advice regarding taking care of yourself whiletaking care of your parents. If your aging parent is critical, demanding, difficult, obstinate, hostile, or depressed, you'll find techniques to help you cope and effectively deal with the situation. If you are caring for an aging parent, this is a must read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written & Helpful
"The New Love and Sex After 60" is a well written and helpful book. There is no question that older men and women may want to remain sexually active much longer than might have been supposed. The authors explain some of the normal changes brought about by aging and changing relationships. They also discuss possible issues brought about by illness. The tone throughout is upbeat and positive and the authors offer practical advice for maintaining a healthy intimate relationship. It's probably time for another revision that would cover a few more recent developments in medicine but this book is still worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars But if you are not looking for advice on HRT...
I hate to see this book represented by 1 reviewer giving it 1 star. I teach in a gerontology program and I found this book very useful in preparing my class on sexuality. The most important message I got from this book is that sex after 60 is normal and natural, but different from sex earlier in life. One point I did not see in my other reading--there is a discrepancy in the number of men and women that increases with age so that by age 85, there are 41 men for every 100 women.I have read many proposed solutions to this, all assuming that men have an innate lower life expectancy than do women. Dr. Bulter's approach is that men need to learn to take better care of their health so that they live longer. This was the most positive, pro-male solution I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of my favorite cities
When I think of retirement cities, I think of towns and cities, both large and small, that have great spirit and lots of choices of things to do -- something for everyone. That is what attracts a wide cross-section of people, which adds to the charm of a place.Dr. Bland has done a wonderful job of capturing that image of his selected cities.
2-0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed in this book
Because it only reviewed those places that were more costly then those I could afford.I have done research on several places myself and there are several less costly but still desireable places to live.It would have been helpful to me to see a more varied survey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done!
Dr. Brand does a very thorough job of researching high quality places to retire. He includes many clear charts and provides lots of information in a variety of formats to assist readers in making their decisions.I especially appreciate his "folksy" approach, which includes not only compiling many pieces of statistical data in an easy-to-understand manner, but also represents discussions he had with residents of each city.A minor complaint is that a few of our favorite places didn't make "the cut," but I realize he had to draw the line somewhere. Good job overall -- and a good value for the money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good News Bad News
If you are in your sixties, seventies, or beyond - or even if you are a precocious fifty-year-old, there is much to be had in this ultimately enigmatic series of essays by feminist, scholar, activist and mystery houndCarolyn Heilbrun. Thoughtful, introspective, funny and only occasionally cantankerous, Heilbrun strikes many a familiar chord in examining the oddly satisfying process of aging, if not gracefully, at least with some unexpected zest.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Conundrum Wrapped in an Enigma
Carolyn Heilbrun wrote this celebration of life after sixty shortly after deciding not to carry out her long-determined plan to commit suicide at 70 and six years before killing herself at 77.To know that outcome increases the frustration and the spasm of anger at her -- how could she so exquisitely detail the joy she found in living over the last decade and a half of her life, and then one day slam the door on those joys through, I understand, an overdose of sleeping pills and a plastic bag around the head for good measure. The clue must lie in this book's last essay, On Mortality, and what Heilbrun seems to fear and foresee in that chapter, that at some increasing age indifference to life succeeds pleasure in life.
1-0 out of 5 stars The lady opted out
It is difficult to relate to this book having the knowledge that Heilburn killed herself -with the consent of her son-because she felt it was all over.Perhaps her isolation had more to do with depression or some such than the spin she puts on it in the book. Her suicide was presented as a rational and logical choice. I don't know. She was an excellent scholar and a feminist thinker at the right time-so kudos to her memory for that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!
This book is terrific for physical therapists and others looking for new ideas in how to remediate balance issues in their patients. The organization, by system, is terrific, and the progression of activities and exercises brillant. Dr. Rose has included the strongest balance measures and even provided a "cheat-sheet" to help make the transition from functional problem to specific exercise. This is a must read for anyone treating balance problems. ... Read more
