5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Those Struggling With Mid-Life
Game Plan is an excellent read for those who are struggling with their purpose and significance in life.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Second Half Career Advise
For those who have climbed the "ladder of success" and then wondered "is that all there is?", this book will help direct one in their pursuit of real meaning in life. While being driven from the early days of our first career to achieve "success" in line with the secular world, it is helpful to reflect on how our life can move to being of value to others. In redirecting our developed skills and ambitions, we can uncover real satisfaction and meaning from our contributions.Highly recommended for those who have already "achieved" much, but are looking to "significance" for the remaining years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent thesis, insights, writing, and recommendations.
This book is a gem and will impact the design for the rest of your life. It offers a critical challenge and practical strategies for creating significance in the second half of life. Bob Buford presents a refreshing view for being active in our middle and senior years. He cites that our accumulated experience and wisdom over our first 20 professional years have prepared us to truly take our gifts and talents to another level, to contribute to the lives of many, and to leave a legacy that continues to make a positive difference after we're gone. His insights are valuable. His recommendations work well. His references to God and Christian principles are sensitively presented and make good sense regardless of the reader's stance on faith. I've been using the strategies effectively for the past 6 months. I have an enhanced personal vision and purpose and an expanded set of goals for my next several decades. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Caregivers!
Caregiving usually doesn't happen gradually. Families are often thrust into the situation because of a crisis, without any experience on how to manage the overwhelming stress, responsibilities, legalities, and medical aspects. Gary Barg has done an excellent job sorting it all out with 'The Fearless Caregiver', guiding the reader through the maze. Very easy to read, motivating, empowering, and highly recommended!5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for all Caregivers!
It is about time that someone tackled the issues that caregivers face.It can often be a lonely and confusing time.I was a caregiver for my mother a few years ago and looked everywhere for a book like this.I needed something to walk me through all of the things I didn't understand. This a well-crafted, easy to read and understand book that all caregivers should read.I wish it had been available five years ago!I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars People 35 and Younger Should Read Soup's People 60 And Over...
I think people 35 and younger or who are perhaps parents should encourage their children and young people in their lives to read this book! I'm privileged by profession (I'm a Registered Nurse) to work with 'seniors,' and let me say loud and clear...'Sixty ain't dead!' So, kudos to the writers of this delicious book. Thank you!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reading
Bought book for my 88 year old mother. The large print enables her to read and the great stories and the humor kept her interested in this book. She really injoyed this book and now I have started reading it also and find it to be delightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grams and Grandpa loved it!
My mom bought me chicken soup for the kids, preteen and preteen 2's soul. I fell in love with the series. Well, my Grams and Grandpa's anniversery was coming up so I thought a rose bouquet, a card, and a chicken soup book would be perfect. I looked for a chicken soup book that would be for 60+ people and I found this! It's just great. But one thing thats not true: Anyone can read this and enjoy it! I am just a kid and I liked it. My grandparents definetly liked it. I recommend this book for everybody! ... Read more

Lynn O'Shaughnessy's book Retirement Bible was informative and helpful as I plan for my retirement. It was in a format that even I could understand.I appreciated her help on buyer beware.I will probably hire a good financial advisor to assist and this book has educated me, so when I do interview advisors I hope they will be ready for all my questions. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Retirement 101
This is a great beginners book for people looking to begin there plans for retirement. It is very basic advice with the biggest angle it uses is if you own a large house in a metropolitin area then sell that house and by a small one in a place with a lower cost of living. A retiree could sell their large house in the state of New York and move to Okalahoma City and live like a king off the equity that was in it. The main point of this book is that you do not need 70% of your current income in retirement to be comfortable. You should be able to dramatically reduce your expenses when you no longer work, like eating out, clothing and gas. You should also have all your debt paid off like your cars, and even your house by retirement time. To learn about this in great detail buy this book, if this sounds like common sense move on.I think any book by Dave Ramsey is all that is ever needed on personal finance, he covers everything. From budgeting to retirement.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying
There is a little useful information in this book, but the main advice is to sell your home in an area where property values are very high and relocate to a less expensive area. This is repeated throughout the sections of the book. If you already live in one of the less-expensive areas and do not have a large house to sell, this advice is little help to you.The author advises things like buying a used car and driving it for many years; haven't most people figured this out on their own? There is a lot of filler in the form of stories about people who illustrate the author's view, many of whom are "indulging their passion for bicycling" in retirement.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any financial library
Fred Brock does it again. This book is loaded with practical and invaluable information. This should be required reading in high schools and universities. It's a quick and easy read, but is filled with tons advice. My favorite aspect of the book that many people fail to realize is cost of living in different parts of the country and how it affects your quality of living. For example, if you earn $35,000 in Wichita, Kansas and can get the same job in San Francisco, CA making $50,000, your quality of life has a high potential to decrease based upon the cost of living. People need to think of these things before deciding where to take a job. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone
At the outset I must declare that I am an over 50 year old male who has never had the slightest desire to own a Corvette, red or otherwise and who has been fortunate, thus far not to do any of the things normally considered to be aspects of a mid life crisis.

1-0 out of 5 stars 101 SECRETS FOR A GREAT RETIREMENT
SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DON'T BUY THIS ONE. IT'S A CORNY COLLECTION OF SENSELESS IDEAS. THE AUTHORS SPEAK APPROVINGLY OF A COUPLE WHO DROPPED THEIR MEDICAL INSURANCE AND SAVED THE MONEY INSTEAD. THEY MANAGED TO SAVE $45,000. THAT MIGHT NOT PAY FOR 1 DAY IN A HOSPITAL. IT WOULD BE INSANE TO DROP YOUR MEDICAL COVERAGE AND TRY TO SAVE ENOUGH ON YOUR OWN. THIS BOOK COULD BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Wisdom
There is a great deal of wisdom in this book by Mary Helen and Shuford Smith. The Smiths cover the practical aspects of retirement as well. The Smiths retired early - ages 39 and 43. They consider their retirement lives extremely rich and provide this guide to fill in a gap that they see in retirement literature. They aren't afraid to tackle issues that many other retirement books don't address, such as the reality of death and sexual changes, while covering the practical aspects of retirement as well.
1-0 out of 5 stars common sense, not "secrets"
I bought this book thinking that the "secrets" therein would enlighten me as to things we might be missing in our planning for retirement. The other reviewers on this site made it sound like the book would have advice on little-known health care deals, finding a good place to live, etc.Instead, it is filled with common sense tips, such as "enjoy sex" and "learn to forgive."Gee, thanks. This might be a good book if you're retired and bored, but don't buy this looking for much more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
Great guidebook for anyone interested in "LIVING." Informative, entertaining, and motivating all in one read. Probably should be required reading for incoming freshman at University. Would have a more lasting impact and retention than most books found on traditional "required reading" lists.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wise, sensible book on healthy aging
A smart, common sense alternative to all the junk science books out there on how to stay young forever.Deals with all the components which go into healthy aging from finances to fitness to staying active and finding fulfillment. No magic pills or secret fountains of youth, just practical, entertaining advice.A fun, informative read. As a a legal aid hotline attorney and owner a retail medical supply and equipment business, I feel this book would be very useful for my clients and customers.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my "Must" readings for caregivers
"What If It's Not Alzheimer's" will help all caregivers to cope with the loss of their loved ones as cognitively sound individuals. Whether Alzheimer's, multi-infarct, Parkinson's, FTD, or any of the dozens of other dementias, the perpetual grief and mourning felt by the caregivers will be the same. Dementia is a disease that knows no boundaries. It is blind to the categories in which we usually place our fellow human beings. It can occur at the age of 55 or 85. It can happen to Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, Christians, Muslims, males and females, rich and poor. It has not spared ex-presidents. Tears are shed by husbands and wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters-in fact anyone responsible for the care of a loved one with dementia. I speak from personal experience. Dementia did not spare my mother whose 15 year journey into the opaque fog of multi-infarct dementia is told in my own recently published memoir. I recommend "What If It's Not Alzheimer's" to anyone whose loved one is experiencing this terrible disease.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
Knowing nothing about frontal lobe dementia, I found this a great resource in finding out what I can do to make my family member more comfortable, as well as exploring the resources available to me. Occasionally I got bogged down with the scientific reports, but overall it is a very accessible book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An updated handbook packed from cover to cover with tips
While general public knows Alzheimer's best among the many dementias in existence, but Playing The Numbers is the first to address FTD, a specific group of dementias and one of the largest non-Alzheimer's groups. The resources and reference material comprising hat If It's Not Alzheimer's? provides the non-specialist general reader with an updated handbook packed with from cover to cover with tips and information for caregivers and sufferers alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Bell at the Helping Hands center almost 10 years ago. It is an amazing program and she is the most amazing person I have ever met. This book teaches you the fundamentals of how the Day Care operates and how to communicate with those afflicted with Dementia. After all these years I still rely on this book and its teachings in my work as a therapist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good idea
This book was very easy to read and understand and for someone just starting caregiving the book gives some good ideas. I do think though that for more indepth information there are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best book on caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease
As a professional in the Alzheimer's field, as well as a family caregiver, I have read dozens of books on caring for people with Alzheimer's disease. Though there are many excellent ones (Claudia J. Strauss's "Talking to Alzheimer's" and Bell & Troxel's "The Best Friends' Book of Alzheimer's Activities" are other favorites), this is the first book I most recommend to anyone on the challenging journey of caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease. It is simply superb. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This groundbreaking book should definitely help further the movement ofwhat the authors call "a new gerontology." John Rowe, M.D., and RobertKahn, Ph.D., both members of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network, thoroughly debunk the myth that aging has to be a painful process ofdebilitation. Their research has shown that the influence of genetics shrinksproportionately as you get older, while social and physical habits becomeincreasingly integral to your state of health--both mental and physical. The 10years' worth of research cited in Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars New perspective
Easy reading in simple language.Encouraging and uplifting.I love how it details the connection between social inter-actions and quality of life. Really good advice for maintaining independence in old age from a physical and mental perspective.Best of all, there is no pressure to rush out and make special purchases.I am getting copies as gifts for siblings - worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Successful Aging
I stumbled upon the book strictly by accident and ended up paying full list price at Barnes and Noble. After seeing the really great prices on Amazon, I reluctently sat down to read a few chapters to try and get my monies worth.Wow.To say the book was enlightening would be to offer a dis-service to the multi-year McArthur Foundation Study.I picked up a few things from the book that most readers will not and that is basic assumptions that Private Foundations and Private Research gathers far more information about a subject than Government sponsored projects. It occured to me that Government has pretty muched screwed up Social Security as well as providing for long term health care in America.Successful Aging gives an alternative to spending your final years in a Nursing Home. The book is very well thought through, well researched and backed up with countless citations that give credit where credit is due. I found the book an enjoyable read, almost a primer. After reading this book, I ordered out about three hundred dollars worth of additional books on aging. That should tell you something.By the way, I ordered another copy of the book in out of print library edition to add to my collection.Great Book!Great Read!Don't get old without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be a classic
The research findings reported in Successful Aging have been supported in a new 20-year study by an independent group of researchers. The study by Becca Levy of Yale Univerisity, et al, was reported in 2002.Simply stated, we can decide now to live longer and better.Having a positive attitude about aging is alone responsible for extending life by 7.5 years, and years of activity and involvment, not suffering. This is a very worthwhile read, despite what some stupid old fools have written before. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely helpful book
I am so glad I found this book.I have been struggling with retirement for the past four years and read many books.I liked the book so much I reread it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
I definitely agree with the other reviews in that this little book is well done with a lot of interesting tips and information.Preparing for retirement, emotionally/psychologically managing not being able to retire when initially planned, and actual retirement. My only hesitation with the book is that many of the people interviewed are upper income/upper management retirees. It is sometimes difficult to be able to relate to some of the transition problems/solutions discussed in the book when you're approaching retirement from a middle income/middle management or blue color perspective where finances may make some of the options less viable solutions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Looking towards retirement with hope and dread. This was a good book from a psychological and emotional point of view.I also read Stop Working by Rohan Hall which prepares one from a financial point of view.I'm happy that these books were written. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Way over 50!
I couldn't give this book 5 stars because, although it looks like a great book in and of itself, it should be titled, "Fitness Over 65" since most of the quotes, stories and photos are of people well over the age of 50, and more like over 65. Keep in mind if you are 52, like me, that with very little current exercise you might be better physically fit and beyond the simple exercises in this book. It's VERY basic. But if you haven't done anything beyond sitting on your couch munching chips and watching the tube your whole life, this book would be a perfect way to break into beginning to get fit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Safe, Reliable Fitness Instruction
This book is a good edition to your fitness library. A safe, effective and easy to follow program.Get this book instead of the numerous other books out there promising to help you stop aging and stay young forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Get Moving!
I strongly feel the need to get moving and this book has the exercises geared for mature adults. After hearing scary stories about osteoporosis and heart problems, I recognize that much of our problems stem from inactivity and sedentary lifestyle. The choice is mine and this book can help me make the change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps you understand yourself, your parents, your friends
The most interesting section of this book for me was right at the beginning where she describes the "endangered generation," those born from 1966-1980. While, I don't usually like to be called endangered, I could completely relate to the description of the troubles our generation is going through- how we have it worse off financially than our parents did in their twenties, and how that explains why we are floating in this in-between stage. This is happening just at the developmental stage in our lives when we'd feel a lot better if we had more financial freedom and didn't have to ask our parents for help. The stresses of dating, not being able to afford more than a cheap apartment (or worse- having to move back in with our parents), and being educated but in a competitive job market, take their toll. At this age, our parents were already married, owned their own home, and had a stable job. So things have changed a lot, and it helps to know that! It frees you to accept society as it is today and make the most of it. She ends the section with a positive prediction that our generation, expecting the least out of life after our disappointing start at adulthood, will end up very successful and appreciating what we have more than other generations. Sheehy is very insightful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mapping this book against time
Conceptually excellent, but a dismally dreary read.5-0 out of 5 stars New Passages Really Helped
I found Sheehy's second "Passages" book almost as good as the first. As an aging baby boomer, the issues of recharting my life direction at middle age has been daunting to say the least.Second Passages provided the structure for this process.I also suggest "The Second Journey" by T. Athey as another good book - more focus on the issues of the Baby Boomer generation.Read more
