2-0 out of 5 stars Technically Lacking
The book doesn't deliver on presenting a computer application system forevaluating performance.Ittakes the CCRC's accredition questions andjust expands on them. From the information that was presented I not sure ifthe authors know what an application system is.In any event the booklacks any hard technical information, or performance standards, that can beused for evaluating and designing a project. It's presentation is more likea general business plan from a recent MBA graduate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best calculator I've found for financial planning...
Although this book deals with many aspects of retirement and retirement planning, what distinguishes it from the dozens of similar books I have read is a truly outstanding calculator for determining how much money willbe available then and how much needs to be saved or invested to eliminateany shortfall. It includes pensions, social security, and savings andinvestments. It factors in life expectancy, income sources that willautomatically increase with inflation and those that won't, savings andinvestment growth rates, withdrawl rates that must increase withinflation(which--unbelievably--some calculators don't consider). It allowsfor early retirement (that is, it doesn't factor in social security untilit's available).Similarly, it allows for staggered commencement ofretirement income sources (for example, a pension that starts at age 65while you may start social security at age 62).I've not found anothercalculator that does ALL of these things!I couldn't recommend it morehighly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, comprehensive, easy to read, useful tips
This guide really lays out, step by step, how to think and act to plan your retirement.I found this a surprisingly quick read, comprehensive, easy to understand and specific -- from spending, lifestyle, insurance, investing issues. The book makes a great gift for friends or parentsbecause too many of us are not paying attention to the easy "ActionItems" that each chapter ends with.Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pre and post retirement planning information.
This guide provides excellent pre-retirement planning suggestions.Has traps, obstacles and helpers outlined for quick review and advice.Has a number of "tools" in the form of worksheets to assist in planning for both before and after retirement events.Presents a number of post-retirement ideas with several suggestions of how to manage and/or increase your income in retirement.Authors are somewhat short on information for the mid 50's retiree concerning how to access 401k and IRA funds without penalty between 55 and 59 1/2.No info on what forms are needed and where they are available, or what needs to be filed and where.Has one slight reference in the appendix on how to accomplish withdrawals without penalty.Having read a number of retirement planning books available on the bookshelf, I found this volume excels in providing useful information not found in similar guide books. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Different book than I expected
This was a very interesting book even for those of us who reitred early (in our 50's) because we had not yet had to deal with many of the issues discussed. However, the title made me think it was going to be more about the non-financial aspects of retirement -- the "Happy" part.
4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Insight From Real Retiree
My first observation in reviewing "How to Retire Happy," by Stan Hinden, is that the title of the book is misleading. In fact, the author essentially waits until the last two pages of the book to tell us some reasons why he really likes his retirement. And we learn essentially nothing of his day-to-day activities that make his retirement a happy one. But, despite the misleading title, things turn out to be just fine, as by the time one reads through all the areas that the author worries about or used to worry about relative to his retirement, it is almost like we have lived through those experiences ourselves. We are now more than ever ready to learn more about the fun part of retirement from another source. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best out there...
A book for the beginner. The financial planning advice was broad in scope, but shallow in depth. For the novice. The book is written in the voice of a person from my parent's generation (I'm 48).The approach to planning here is very conservative and even a bit naive. There were some good passages on trusts and wills.I was also a bit surprised there was no mention of non-financial issues relating to retirement, like personal growth.Money isn't everything.Try the book by Wasik, much better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Where Our Beliefs on Aging Originated...
Cole provides a rich study of the culture of aging in America.Exhaustively researched, The Journey of Life is a must for gerontologists, policymakers, medical professionals, and anyone who is interested in a deeper understanding of why we believe what we do about aging in America, factors influencing these beliefs, and how they have developed over time. Its academic tone can make for a dry read early on, but overall, very well written and intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars How we see death, the aged and agingchanges historically
If you're scared of what awaits you as you age in this country where thefrail elderly are too often warehoused in short-staffed, soullessinstitutions andby and large exiled from the mainstream of our society nomatter where or how they happen to live, you will probably find hope inthis book, which shows by historical example that we change. The Journey ofLife : A Cultural History of Aging in America is awell written vista ofAmerican social perceptions. Tom Cole writes as if he is fascinated by thepanorama of his research into how Americans have seen the elderly andaging. He shows us the views we have moved through in strategic detail, notoverwhelming us with statistics or boring us with long, dull paragraphs ofpsycho-social explanations, but carefully exposing the layers of Americanbelief, fear, hope, and socio-economic reality from which have arisen ourviews of death, aging, and the aged from the early days through thepresent. From vile, malevolent curmudgeons on their way to the dark pit ofannihilation to sweet, harmless fools shuffling through zippedy-doo-dalandscapes toward automaticacceptance into a radiant heaven, to thepresent, where we simply seem to lose our faces in the rush ofhyper-productivity and adoration of the sexy young, the American view ofthe aged and aging constantly changes, reflecting the dominant perceptionsof our society. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good
A great book that takes premature ejaculation and explains it from the ground up. No unnecessary information , no style, just the pure facts presented in a step by step approach to the disorder. Robert W. Birch short textbookpresents only the basics of managing premature ejaculation, if you want more out of a book maybe you should look for a much more detailed title, something like [...], the best book on sexual disorders on the market

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and advice
Apparently I'm the first person to review this important book. I'm a little surprised about this, since Dr. Birch has excellent credentials and this is such a potentially important problem in a couple's sex life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
This is a good "get ya started" book on the basis and motivations preceding the Nazi movement. Lots of well done background research. Readable and factual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Axis Mundi: The Occult Polar Archetype
_Arktos: The Polar Myth in Science, Symbolism and Nazi Survival_ by Joscelyn Godwin is an interesting book about occult and pseudoscientific theories on polar shifts, the succession of ages, the Aryan race, the "hollow earth" theory, Nazi underground bases, lost cities, UFOs, mystical powers, theosophy, sex magick and a host of other obscure topics. The book begins with a discussion of the theory of polar shift, its relation to astrological, occult and Hindu calculations concerning the ages the earth has gone through. The actuality of the proverbial Golden Age might have some support if at some point in the past the earth's axis was parallel to the sun and not veering at a tilt. The North Pole would have had a temperate climate, illuminated by the shining stars, moon, the aurora borealis and the light of the sun visible beyond the horizon-a place of eternal light, a theoretical location for the Garden of Eden.Arising from this polar theory is the notion of a primordial polar homeland for the human race. This leads into the bizarre theories of the origin of the Aryan race and the superiority of Indo-European culture and religion over that of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Semites. The Nazi believed that the Germans had a mystical homeland in a northern region known as Thule. The theories of the Nazis are examined, including Alfred Rosenburg and his official exposition of Nazi philosophy, _Myth of the Twentieth Century_.The Sicilian esotericist Julius Evola and his book _Revolt Against the Modern World_ also draws from the polar myth.He believed that an original Aryan race migrated from a polar Hyperborea, following a solar religion dominated by the warrior ethos and conquering spirit.According to Evola, the original religion of these Aryans has its elements sown in the myths of world in a variety of cultures.A more aberrant view of Nazi occultism comes from Miguel Serrano, a Chilean diplomat and author. His work _Hitler: El Ultimo Avataro_ describes a cosmic struggle between the Order of Nazis who are currently located in a hidden base in Antarctica against "the Demiurge": Judaism, Christianity and Freemasonry. The deliverance of the Aryan race will come when Nazi flying saucers emanate from Antarctica and take over the world. Many theories have also circulated about a possible "hole at the pole" where adventurers could gain access to subterranean Utopias.Aghartha and Shambhala are two mythical cites in Central Asia whose existence has been either literally or figuratively believed in.The denizens of Aghartha stand for worldly power while Shambhala is the abode of mystical enlightenment. The place of Antarctica is examined in detail as well as the North Pole. While the North Pole has a pleasant reputation (surprisingly Santa's house is not mentioned) as a cozy homeland, the South Pole has stood for the earth's demons. In old legends, treachery, death and monsters have been associated with the South. In modern times this translates into Serrano's secret Nazis in Antarctica plotting against humanity. The Pole figures to a great extent in the various theories of the origins of religion as well.In the period after the Renaissance, Reformation and Enlightenment, many different scholars attempted to develop a unified theory to explain the origins of the world's religions. One theory was one of a universal solar worship. An example of this would be the Gospels written to describe the sun passing through the signs of the Zodiac throughout the year.Phallus worship was another theory, attributing religion to the awe primordial men felt toward the generative and fertile sources of nature. The polar theory is a combination of the two. The swastika also has its origins here. The positions of Ursa Minor taken together throughout the seasons of the year thousands of years ago would have looked liked a swastika when depicted on a chart showing the seasonal observations simultaneously. The mythical "Land of the Sun" in several ancient cultures and astrological setups also show a polar orientation.Godwin notes that King Arthur may be drawn from the polar/solar traditions as well. The "Spiritual Pole" chapter covers the metaphysical practices, including Yoga, which have used polar and axial ideas to stand as a metaphor for an ascent into enlightenment. The last third of _Arktos_ summarizes the theories of why the earth's axis is at a tilt. The "catastrophists" believed that the pole shifted in sudden violent changes in ages past and was responsible for epochal calamities. The "uniformitarians" on the other hand postulated that the earth is continually shifting its polar locations, repeating in cycles. The scientific theories concerning polar shifts are examined, but Godwin draws no conclusions for or against the idea.Of course, most of the occult literature on the subject is totally at odds with objective science. The most outlandish theorist examined here is Cyrus Teed, AKA "Koresh" (no Waco connection). This mystic propagated the idea that we are actually living on the concave of earth's inner shell. The stars, planets and the sun are reflections inside the earth itself. One aspect of Godwin's book that makes it informative is his objectivity-and possibly even a subtle hint of approval--towards his subjects.Godwin concludes by making reference to the Kali Yuga, the Age of Iron that describes the modern world process of decay according to Hindu eschatology, in addition to the "end of the Age of Pisces."Although Godwin does not take Pisces as referring to Christ, he makes his support clear toward the idea of the "earth reasserting its rights" with a polar shift--a massive global catastrophe--that will destroy the pretenses of humanity and inaugurate the next Golden Age.

2-0 out of 5 stars Initial dissapointment - 2 stars for now
I know next to nothing about long-term elder care, so I bought this book as an introduction. I have just started reading it (I am through page 71) and it is introducing a number of terms and concepts that appear to be very useful. However, I was startled by the sloppy financial analysis example on page 66. Entitled "Pay Now or Pay Later", it has the tone of sales material from a provider of long term elder care insurance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book -- A Must Read For Every Baby Boomer
This book is excellent, and opens your eyes to the very real possibility of encountering a serious 'health event', now, or in years ahead, and with no plan for financing this near certainty. As a nation, we mistakenly have believed that Medicare or Medicaid will be there for us.WRONG!Phyllis Shelton is leading the pack in helping to cast light on this all important subject. This book can arm you with the right questions to ask, and the right direction to look. You won't be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed and Informative
This is a very detailed report on what happens when you get ill later in life and Medicaid or Long Term Insurance are necessary. The book has a great deal of facts, but is somewhat hard to follow and very complicated - just like Medicaid actually is. If you want to prepare yourself for very possible situations in your (or your parents') senior years - this is the book for you. Just make sure you have enough time to read and understand it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fine guide for re-writing the story of elder health care.
Peake is commended for openly and honestly addressing the currentcondition of health care for the aged. " Healthy Aging, HealthyTreatment " is an excellent addition to the library of those whoprovide health care services to the aged.Troughout this text Peakepresents a non-treatening yet effective means by which to address theprimary goal of psychotherapy; re-writing core beliefs. The current storyof health care for the "third age" is repleat with frighteningimages as well as themes of ignorance, denial, neglect and fear.Perhapswe can use Peake's final chapter as an outline by which to re-write thismystery into a story that more accurately reflects our innate care, concernand compassion for one another. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a combined personal and professional review of Alzheimer's
I picked up this book while browzing the bookstore in an effort to makesense of the behavior my family was seeing in my 87 year old mother who hadhad a stroke (right brain) in 12/97.Having been told that she wassuffering from "vascular dementia", I proceeded to investigatewhat that really meant. Even my son, a physician, was not really clear onhow that differed from Alzheimer's.Dr. Gillick's book outlines a typicalcourse of dementia, from early to late stage using a fictional compositepatient drawn from her medical experience. She interstices this story withfactual material on legal, political, medical research, and cost issues.Ihave recommended this book to friends and colleagues interested in aging, particularly related to brain assaults. There is much good material inthis book even if the patient is not a diagnosed Alzheimer's sufferer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful source of comfort, hope, and spiritual grace
Journeying East: Conversations On Aging And Dying is an anthology of conversations with nine men and women, each of whom has been recognized worldwide as teachers of Eastern and Western wisdom, understanding, and spirituality. Each one is in the later stages of life, and each discusses the transitions of aging, dying, and death, and the transcendent meaning in each phase. "When you are truly aware of death, it's a serious and deep encounter with life," states Zen master Norman Fischer. A reflective and very thoughtful source of comfort, hope, and spiritual grace.
4-0 out of 5 stars interviews with spiritual leaders
Dimidjian found that four themes stood out in interviews she had with recognized spiritual leaders during her sabbatical from teaching. These are: interest in the subject of aging is growing as the Baby-Boom generation, to which the author belongs, ages; the integration of ideas from Eastern and Western cultures is continuing to grow; living and dying are intertwined; and lastly, what we "know" is never complete and is not in itself fulfilling. Ram Dass, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sister Chan Khong, Norman Fischer, and Michael Eigen are among the nine she interviewed. Seeing the interviews as extensions of her role as a teacher, Dimidjian helps to shape the interviews by thoughtful questions and perceptive comments.

5-0 out of 5 stars For All Ages and for All Time
Like her former partner Robert A. Johnson, Helen Luke is a master of rendering the psychological meanings in great literature understandable and relevant to all people wishing to gain a deeper level of understanding about the growtn of the human soul.Having plumbed the depths of her own psycho-spiritual aging process(Such Stuff As Dreams are Made On), Ms. Luke has created a work fusing literary scholarship and personal experience into a guide for all of us to follow towards the inevitable. When the time comes for me to plant my oar (read her interpretation of The Odyssey)and turn towards the life of prayer, song and storytelling I will be eternally grateful to have had this wonderful Wise Woman as my guide.Deserving of a wide readership. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Find for Both Clinicians and Caregivers
Author Barry Jacobs has done his homework well and speaks of his subject matter with both expertise and the human touch of one who knows this territory first hand from having lived it both personally and professionally. As a practicing clinician, I have recommended it to many patients who are struggling with issues around the aging and declining health of their parents. Jacobs provides a prospective that steers a middle course between acknowledging the guilt that adult children feel around the need to take care of themselves while taking care of their parent, and the real physical and emotional demands of caretaking. Besides all that, he is a good writer and tells us about the central lessons of caretaking through the story of two sisters facing the serious illness of their mother. This subject is one most of us have to face sooner or later, and Barry Jacobs gives us an excellent guide as to how to navigate the terrain as well as possible.
5-0 out of 5 stars a book that all caregivers and professionals should read
Barry Jacobs has written an excellent book not only for caregivers of aging medically ill parents but for professionals who work with patients and families coping with chronic illness. Several things stand out in this book. First is the approach which involves following a ficionalized pair of adult sisters who are caring for and coping with an ailing mother. Jacobs writes this account with great depth and creativity and is able to capture the kinds of feelings and describe the kinds of patterns that are often missing in other 'self help' books. Second, Jacobs also utilizes his own expereince, personal and professional, including advice columns he has written over the years. Third, the book covers evrerything from how to decide how much care you can provide to how to consider spiritual and other issues. Fourth, along the way are plenty of very valuable "how to" suggestions that will be of great benefit to any reader. If you are looking for even one caregiving book for your bookshelf, choose this one. Excellent read. Excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good and powerful story
The Emotional Survival Guide for Caregivers is an amazing book focused around the difficulties faces by two sisters taking care of their ailing mother.Real people can relate to the characters and their struggles are real to many people across America and the rest of the world.I think that anyone who is a caregiver should definately read this book. ...
